Major US Airline To Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen

Tue Jul 11, 2006 12:03 am

The latest Airliner World has a feature on Sabiha Gokcen airport and indicates there could be SAW-USA flights soon

Quote:
Ffrom May next year, an as yet undisclosed major North American airline will offer seven intercontinental scheduled passenger flights per week to SAW from the USA

I wonder who this could be? CO?

I'm almost certain it would be CO, the yields between NYC-IST are very high and TK and DL are making good money with the route it actually suprised me why no one other than DL in US looked at the route, I'm doubtful about SAW though I think people prefer IST over SAW.
Also I hear cargo is making a lot of money on the route constantly which offsets the usually weak winter flights.
I can't wait for the announcement. my question is can a CO 757 make EWR-SAW with reasonable payload?

Unfortunately for you Humberside my fellow Turkish anetters don't post unless you are criticizing TK Wink
I am surprised why American anetters don't show interest on this topic though.

I do find this interesting. Forgive my ignorance, as I am not too familiar with the geography around Istanbul or the infrastructure of the two airports, but what advantage would there be for a U.S. airline to serve SAW instead of IST? Is it a better facility, or better located in relation to the city?

No, it would require the range of a 762 (or a 787 if CO waits a few years!).

Well its like the LHR and LGW debate, although connections to other Turkish cities is not the major issue, for international transit passangers(loads of them to Middle East and other smaller EU markets) it would be an issue. Also IST, since you mentioned location, for business pax is more convenient since unlike SAW you don't have to cross the bridge to get to most if not all business districts in IST.
I just don't see a major carrier from US going to SAW, but if CO offers good pricing on the route they will fill that plane with Turkish pax everyday SAW or IST.

Thanks for clearing that up, I was almost certain it would be a 767. Now if only DL had more T7's JFK-IST would be on that and it would be a welcomed change on my monthly trip Smile

It sounds too good to be true:

-I thought US-Turkey bilaterals don't allow more US airlines to serve this route. (Laxintl, help?)
-DL, supposedly, will be going daily year around starting next year, after all this time of service. So it is not that easy to sell those seats.
-767 to SAW with all the security requirements for US flights? Too many people, not enough airport.
-Just like Gokmengs says, connections will be a headache. Even going into the city might take a couple of hours depending on the time of the day.
-TK will do anything to keep this to themselves. Lower prices, more leg room, better food options, free booze, amenity kit on all seats, soon.. PTVs.

Sure I would like to see CO do it, maybe they will.

I believe Laxintl said one time that US and Turkey has no limits(sorry don't know the terminology) so I think carriers from both countries are allowed to start services with no such limits.

That was supposed to happen for a while now and even ATL-IST 7X weekly summer and 3-4X weekly on winter but never happened.

I'm actually surprised they haven't since they serve many markets from EWR, plus the Turkish population in jersey is getting closer to that of NY.
I think CO would do it soon but to IST from EWR not SAW

AA, CO, DL, UA and US all have rights to fly to Turkey from the U.S. Are there limits to the number of flights per week for each? No idea. Someone familiar with the U.S.-Turkey bilateral will have to answer that one.

That person is Laxintl, and he usually participates in most Turkish aviation threads, we shall wait and see?
I think you are right though couse I remember back in the day AA was contemplating ORD-IST

When you think about it, it;s most likely to be CO.
