What's Next For MKE?

Tue Jul 11, 2006 1:35 am

Hello all. Since the 440th is moving out (sadly), what will MKE do with the extra space? Opinions are welcome for what they should do.  Smile

Fantasy ieas -

Major air-cargo facility? You could easily unload there and throw things on the trucks or the railroad tracks right behind the 440th bound for Chicago land - probably would be chaper than using O'hare.

Major maintenenace facility for someone like NWA?

That's a link to the Master Plan update. The proposed C-1 runway is overlaid on what is presently the 440th.

It will probably take 10-20 years for the feds to release the 440th land for re-development. Those wheels turn slow.

Well all the remodeling of the terminal is moving forward..though the D concourse stuff looks like it's taking forever.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

Given the manufacturing roots in Milwaukee, I've always thought too that this would make for a solid cargo facility location to serve the region, particularly with its intermodal opportunities for rail (as you noted) and highway (I-94) nearby.

Ultimately, with the development of the C-1 runway, this location becomes a sort of de facto midfield terminal of some sort. So it's an interesting opportunity for GMIA to consider in updating their Master Plan sometime down the road.

Wells heres what I think they should do...buil a new & bigger international terminal! Of course its just a fantacy of mine and theres little hope for it, but
I think it'd be cool if MKE got a new international terminal. I'm guessing tourist travel on charters to Mexico & Carribean is increasing and maybe a new international airline would come here. But I guess its still a few years off before thinkin bout that.
Will you watch the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions on Sunday? Only if coach Eric Mangini resigned after a loss.

Fantasies are fine. It will be a long time before its all moved out. I think cargo and a new terminal are the best approaches.

Well think about it...if they were to build new cargo terminal, then they would tear down the old one and have that space left over. Then it'd be kinda like starting all over again don't ya think?

I'm thinking expansion, not remodeling. The new cargo terminal would increase capacity for cargo airlines who already serve MKE, and possibly bring other contracts in.

What I'm sayin is if that they build a new cargo terminal on the east side of the airport where the USAF is movin out, then I'm guessing they aren't gonna keep the old one around eh? Also, anyone know MKE's current cargo flight schedule?

Don't worry - you can catch the one this weekend! The Air Force Thunderbirds are practicing outside of my office window as I type.

Yeah, another great act this year. I get to miss it again cause of work...I'm crossing my fingers in hope that the Thunderbirds put on a "Thank You" performance for the controllers and everyone at MKE as the Blue Angels did last year when they were here for this airshow. Cause I'll be working sunday when they leave.
