Why Is SAS Retiring The MD90?

Tue Jul 11, 2006 6:56 am

Why is SAS retiring the MD90 from its fleet whilst retaining a large fleet of MD80s? Aren't the MD90s more fuel efficient than the MD80s?

It was to expensive to just operate 8 aircraft and a dedicated flight deck crew.

Oh - I read in 'Airliner World' magazine a couple of years ago an article about the MD90 in SAS service and it said that the flight crew were rated on both the MD80 and the MD90 - was this not the case?

Delta should pick up these MD90s along with JALs. Would be a smart pick up, but I dont think they are in a position to aquire new airplanes.

DL might not be, but I'm sure that GECAS is, and they could just lease them to DL for 10 years or so.

Those who were MD-90, were normally also MD-80 rated.

But the vast majority of MD-80 drivers were not MD-90 rated.

Hello in Switzerland picked most of them up long time ago. Three of those Hello planes are doing round the clock service for Iceland Express.

Too bad. Those MD-90s were the best planes SAS ever had.

I think that Hello in Switzerland has taken six of the eight former SAS MD-90s, and they are on lease from Boeing Capital. Here is one of them in Iceland Express scheme:

The remaining two I believe are currently operated by the SAS subsidiary Blue 1.

Hello's first three MD90's came via VCV from previous users.

As is clear from this case, fuel efficiency is only one of many factors involved in the total cost of ownership.

Apart from operational factors (which seem to have been the main reason), SK may have had diadvantageous lease terms (on airframes, engines, APUs) or they may even have received a good price for them and decided to unload them at a good time.
