The AP flies the aircraft and the crew usually eat with a knife and fork!

 Wink

Unless of course they get BBQ Chicken, but that makes a mess of the MFD's!

It's easier if I'm the "pilot flying" because then, I don't have to worry about talking to ATC with a full mouth. Even if I'm "pilot monitoring" I've learned to shove the food to one side of the mouth so ATC can understand what I say. I love food and I love flying, so there's nothing better than eating on a plane!

The flight attendants ususally sit in the galley on the jumpseats and have a tray on the lap, Most flights so busy that you cannot get a chance to eat anyway, plus airplane food to me isn't the best in the world. Lucky me have only been poisioned by it twice!!  Silly If the back row is free on a light load, ususally we sit there and eat. But in the galley there is a little more leg room  Silly

At B6 most of us pack our own lunch kits. If not, I usually buy something in the airport and bring it along. As I understand it, in the beginning at B6, "vouchers" were givin to crewmembers providing free meals to bring on longhaul flights. As the airline grew, this amenity was taken away.

Does someone announce (or do you announce to yourself) "Beef or chicken" before making a selection? Or do you say "Tonights crew meal consists of beef stroganoff with new potatoes or Chicken Kiev and wilted vegetables"? How many times would you have to say it over and over again until a meal is selected?

And what do you do when your selection is out?

Though there is a general safety rule about crew meals, very few airlines and crew adheres to it strictly. Crew meals in my airline are not very common, since only three flights are above the 3:00 hours flight time. We do get, however breakfast on the early flights departing out of my base.

Same here. But airport food can get very boring also. I kid you not, but I've seen crews carrying in their bags Corn Flakes, oatmeal, tuna cans and instant soups! Perhaps being a little cheap or absolutely disgusted about airline/airport food...

For the very short time that I flew as a F/A at CO in the mid 80s, I would usually hide in the galley with my lunch that I brought on board. If you were even lucky enough to find time to eat, that is. Fast fwd to my HP/US days. The flight deck gets a crew meal at various times of the day in different cities, and get to eat when they have a moment, and the F/As usually run off the plane and grab something to snarf down before boarding begins. I dont know how many times I would go on to tell the crew we were boarding only to see them with their mouth full, giving me that look of, please....just a few more minutes Big grin .

Not true. Both airlines I've worked for that offered their pilots meals had different meals then what was offered to the passengers.

At Alaska, it was pretty much the SAME ALL THE TIME!! Pilots and FA's received the same food for months on end. It was not appealing after looking at a turkey and cheddar sandwich served on a bagel for the 245th time.

At United, crewmembers and pilots can request special meals for all Domestic ID's (pairings). International ID's for crewmembers are different, as they just double board all First Class main course meals and you get what's left over. Not a bad deal though, as the FC meals were always delicious to me.

If you get the same meal as the PAX, do international pilots get the First Class meal or the economy meal lol??

Also isn't it true that both pilots can't have the same meal??

At UAL the pilot meals are ordered from a selection of choices. You can change your choice between, Fish, Chicken, Regular (pasta, beef or chefs choice), Low Fat, Kosher, Hindu and a couple of others. If I am flying to LHR I tend to order the Hindu as the kitchen seems to do that a notch above the others. If you fly to South America the beef is a good choice. Domestically it all taste about the same, HA! One choice we have also is a salad meal. This is probably one of the best on the domestic structure. It is generally a very nice chef's salad and gives you the warm and fuzzy healthy feeling.

I forgot to add that an Airbus pilot eats in a very civilized manner from a pull out tray table in the forward panel. All the others use books, extra long trays and various other implements to try and steady the tray on their laps while eating. I miss the bus purely for this reason alone!

Mel,

Hindu is bascially an Indian meal. We have a Hindu, Muslim and Kosher as speciality meal choices. I think it is to afford those that need to meet a certain diet for religious concerns to meet them. But it doesn't prevent those not associated with the faith to partake in the fine cuisine of the culture  Smile

I learnt from a seperate thread that, as airbus uses side stick controllers to fly the plane which are obsviously located either side of the cockpit, thus allowing a table to fold out from the control panel right infront of the pilot. Can anyone confirm this?

On a side note, pilots must also be careful not to drop a can of pop on the center console. The small knobs can puncture the can, and the resulting leak can cause some serious problems.

I have seen them pull out that table and chairs everytime I have flown them. I also sat down with them once on F-GLZK in the rear galley of this A340 EWR-CDG. I didn't have a meal with them, but I was chatting with them in the galley and they asked me to take a seat while they were eating. I had dessert with them though.

cheers

Airbus pilots (except A300/310) have a neat table to eat meals on. Pity those poor Boeing drivers that have to eat on their laps. Crew meals are different from passenger meals for most airlines. Also pilots don't eat the same meals in case there is some food contamination or poisoning. So if the Captain has fish, then the copilot will have chicken or beef (well something along those lines).

A Hindu meal is an Indian style meal with no beef or by products of beef whatsoever as the cow is sacred to Hindus.
