Tragic Plane Crash In Mexico

Thu Jul 13, 2006 12:39 am

I did a search and couldn't find this topic on the forum, so please excuse me if someone posted it already.

Four children were "rewarded" for getting good grades by getting a ride on a light plane in Mexico. The plane tragically crashed killing all the kids and the pilot. The story can be found here: http://abcnews.go.com/International/...ry?id=2178340&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312

Yeah this is sad news. What type of airplane was it, multi-engine airplane or single engine? turbo or piston engine? How was the weather? I guess more info will come later.

Saw it on the news yesterday they showed a crashed small plane.....it looked like a one engined cessna, weather seem sunny at the place of the accident and the reported mentioned it had crashed during climb.

Sad day indeed............my condolences to the families.

A 152 is a 2 seater. So it must have been at least a 172 at the minimum. I haven't seen any photos so it could just as well be a Piper or Beech toy.

5 in a C172 ???

Did they all have seatbelts?

The 172 I rent is over CG limits with 3 adults and some good amount of fuel.

Not to speculate of course  Sad Very sad.

I don't know what the regulations are in Mexico, but here you may put two children (i.e. someone 3-12 years old inclusive) in a single seat, provided their combined weight is less than 77kg, and the seat belt is secured around both of them. The number of extra passengers you may carry in this fashion depends on the number of seats in the aircraft - for a 172, you can carry one extra person, giving a total capacity of 5 people including the pilot...

I think there is a mod to install a fifth seat in the small cargo area, provided such and such weights are not exceeded. Should have to dig into my old manuals though.

Also, the news indicate that "The children were between the ages of 10 and 14 years old", their weight plus the light fuel load for the short scenic flight shouldn't make of CG a big deal on the accident. Of course, we should wait for the final report to see what really happened.

I read it was usual for the owner of the small air taxi to reward local students each year. What a sad sad story!

yes indeed...  frown  thoughts/preyers to the families...i know exactly what the kids where thinking when they knew of the flight for good grades...i was in that age group when i took my first plane ride in a TWA 707 out of SFO, a 30-min flight around the bay area, back to SFO. my school had a program for students who NEVER flown, get grades back up to get the flight of your life  airplane
I already have the quilty concious, may as well have the money, too.

Not to speculate but it sounds like a typical case of an overloaded/off balance aicraft attempting to climb in severe high density altitude conditions with inevitable results...

My condolences to all the people who have been hurt by this terrible accident.

It just won't stop will it ? First the A310 at Irkutsk, full of kids, then this Cessna.

Very sad news indeed.
Cheers

The first media link is wrong! Kids had between 8 and 10 years. That was in fact the 3rd flight of the day... the first two flights both with 4 pax plus pilot went ok... that day they were going to give free rides to a total of 20 children.
