Become an elite.

In the US, for domestic flights, you can upgrade on most airlines once all elites have been upgraded for a certain amount...normally $50 for short-haul, $75-150 for mid-range flights, and $150-200 for trans-continental flights. In the rare case that airlines are in need of seats on trans-oceanic flights, I've heard they sell them for $500-800 (US offers passengers the right to buy up to Envoy for $500 24 hours before departure), but some airlines (UA I believe) only offer this benefit when coach is oversold, and on others (I believe DL) doesn't offer it (good luck getting a day-of-departure international upgrade on DL...it doesn't happen).

You are going to have to be far more specific....this is an impossible question for anyone to answer; are talking Y to F, Y to J, J to F, upgrading with miles, which airline, etc, etc. There is no general rule.

Do some research on fares on individual airline web sites to get an idea.....you just joined a.net, welcome, but why not do some work on your own before asking a question such as this....members will answer, but it must be a question that can be answered.

What airlines offer the cheapest upgrades? I'm not talking frequent fliers or members of clubs... just regular passengers who fancy an upgrade to the next class...

The cheapest upgrades tends to be from economy to premium economy, however many tickets bought do not qualify for an upgrade - regardless of the circumstances, certainly here in the UK.

In fact fairly often a flexible economy ticket which allows you to upgrade will be more expensive than a non flexible ticket in the premium economy cabin.
