IND/Cargolux 747 Question

Thu Jul 13, 2006 7:05 am

Has anyone been able to catch the Cargolux 747 arrive/leave IND since this service started on Friday's back in February? I'm most curious about which side of the airport the plane parks for loading/unloading and which runway they are more likely to use - 23L/5R or 23R/5L - if that's possible to determine.

Schedules show arrival time at IND at 1:35pm on Friday, departing for LUX (via Los Angeles) at 3:05pm.

Thanks in advance (I'd like to make the drive to IND soon to see if I can get some pics of this plane arriving and/or leaving IND). Seeing a Boeing 747 at Indianapolis would be a real treat!

Yeah I got pics of it a couple of weeks ago. It landed on the western most runway and parked down where the old express mail facility was.

Indy,

Are there any good spotting locations at the end of either 5L or 23R, since that's the runway closest to that side of the airport?

Thanks,

I hear the parking lot at the international arrivals shack is a decent location. Not sure if it is the best or not.

If you're referring to the USPS Eagle Air Network, that closed in 2001 when Federal Express got the contract from Emery Worldwide.

I've had decent luck spotting from that parking lot, but a) didn't use a camera and b) stayed in my car (with binoculars, though).

I am just telling you... chase that you are lucky...... I was off duty and i am a Indianapolis Police officer in my POV not in my police car and they told me that i have to leave. Then i drove my police car there and they came up the next day and talked to me and i did not have to leave the parking lot... LoL

Yeah,
I just saw it today. It was parked down by AAR(The old UA Hangar).

Actually, the Emery Fleet was grounded when Fedex took the USPS contract, but Kitty Hawk, Gemini, Polar, and a few others were hauling mail at that time.

RE: IND/Cargolux 747 Question

I saw the Cargolux 747 Friday. It came in on 23R at about 4:12pm. Flytecomm.com showed a planned arrival of 4:09pm Friday despite the schedules showing a 1:35pm arrival. Departure from 23R was just before 6:00pm, IIRC. I noticed that the plane parked at the old United Airlines maintenance facility.

We had a great time. Upon our arrival on top of the parking deck, an ATA L-1011 (probably N163AT, which is shown in the database) took off on 23R. We caught three FedEx MD/DC-10's, a couple A-300's and my friend thought he saw a FedEx MD-11 when we were driving up the parking deck "spiral." We were able to watch some of these (and an A-310) takeoff on 23L.

Thanks to all who answered my questions!

I seem to remember that Emery fought this because their contract had three years left (2001-2004) and accused USPS of breaking it illegally. I know the USPS-related "daysort" at DAY ended before the airline was grounded because those hub flights didn't happen during the air show in July 2001 (Emery was grounded the following month, IIRC). I had seen this "daysort" during the weekend air show in both 1999 and 2000.
