AA @ NGO Video

There have been many discussions about AA possibly taking over JL's LAX-KIX route while some say it would be better if AA had done LAX-NGO instead of out of ORD (I agree).

I had stated in some of these that I would post a video of the first landing at NGO. It took me a year to actually get around to finishing it. (Lots of actual work to do).

The video is of the first landing of AA #27 (ORD-NGO) on April 3rd, 2005. The flight was suspended 6 months later on October 30th due to "fuel costs" and "weak business demand".

Anyway here is the video. It was a very windy day. Infact I saw a CRJ and a Q400 abort landings. But this is one amazingly sweet landing. Enjoy.

The headwind seems to be quite strong. The airplane moves very slowly.

They were. If you listen to audio at the beginning and end, you can tell the difference. The wind makes more noise than the engines!

This is NGO's little problem in spring when the weather patterns change, it can create some pretty strong headwinds. But they planes land from the south more than from the north. I have actually never seen a plane approach from the north.

Not to mention probably a senior pilot was at the command. Lots of VIPs were on the plane. I was there picking up an exchange student who flew over for the world expo on the flight for $350 RT. (That flight only)

Actually it was a somewhat rough landing. There was quite a bit of tire smoke on landing which is a sign of a harder landing, the less smoke the smoother the landing.

It looked like a bloody good landing to me, both sets of main undercarriage wheels hit the deck at the same time!

A 787 would have been perfect for that route..!

The route was making money, but not a lot (even after the Toyota contract service ending), and they needed the -200ER's for other places such as ORD-DEL (doing very well) .....

Just wanted to clarify about approaches into NGO from the north. Almost everytime I take the NRT-NGO on NWA they approach from the north. I would have to say that probably 70% of all the flights that I have had to and from NGO use the approach from the north and departure to the south.

Also great video, I never had the chance to take this AA flight as I am always trying to get more NW miles, but it was a sad day when they cancelled this flight. Here's hoping that NGO continues to grow and I can't wait to see the 747-LCF arrive when they start shipping 787 pieces.

Hmm....I just remembered my departure from NGO to HKG was going south. We started by the cargo apron and went south. But the return HKG-NGO as well as my flights on NW71 landed from the south. At the old NGO (NKM) an approach from the north-east was very common though I had several South-west approaches and departures.

I am not sure, maybe someone can define this. The winds at NGO come from the northwest and west. That would mean a south approach would be a strong crosswind of headwind. An approach from the north would allow for tailwinds with a cross wind remaining. Which would be better?

A tailwind is never a good setup for landing, particularly if it is from a crosswind angle. That situation is known as a quartering tailwind and it dramatically affects aircraft handling in a not-so-good way.

Around 70% of the time the winds at NGO are out of the north but when strong fronts come through from the Sea of Japan (particularly this time of year) winds are often out of the south due to the counterclockwise rotation of the lows that have a tendency to sit over the Chubu region. Based on observation only, I can also say with some confidence that often when winds have been out of the north most of the day, they often shift in the evening hours. The Nobi plain and Ise-wan both act as quite a reliable wind tunnel so it's rare for strong crosswinds to be present at NGO due to its north south orientation.

I've flown out of Centrair six times since it opened and only once have I departed to the north.
