Delta Air Lines flight 60, GIG-ATL on Wednesday night, declared emergency due to fire on one of the engines and returned to GIG. The plane, a 763 under registration N153DL landed at GIG without further problems and in safety.

The plane is still at GIG this night.

Also N173DL, another 763, is on ground at GIG at 0:18 (should depart as DL9895 GIG-ATL at 2200 local time or DL0060 at 2245, this one cancelled probably because N153DL is not able to run a flight)

Does anyone has more info on this ?

I'd assume the second aircraft is either N173DZ or N173DN, since DL doesn't have an N173DL.

A DL employee could likely help with any info.

Only ship 1503 is grounded at GIG at this time. Ship 173 was sent down to protect the passengers. Ship 173 is not grounded.

Confirmed by GIG Airport. There are now 3 DL ships at GIG:

N153??, going to VEM for maintenance.
N173DN, on position 20R
N188DN, on position 18L. Schedulled for DL60 today.

Yes it was a fire on one of the engines confirmed by Infraero (the company owned by the government that manages Brazilian airports). Fireman's prepared the runway 10-28 with foam. The plane landed safely after dropped the fuel over the Atlantic.

This is bad, two aircrafts in Rio seems to be a big trouble for the route managers even with a huge fleet like DL.

For what it's worth, there's a distinction between an emergency landing because of a cockpit indication of an engine fire and a post-landing determination that a fire had indeed occurred. You're gonna blow the bottles, shut down the engine, dump fuel and land on either occasion. The difference is whether -- after landing -- you discover that there was a fault in the detection system (common) as opposed to an actual fire in the engine (much less common).

Hmmm, common terminology in the air/travel industry. It refers to making sure passengers are not stranded and essentially taken care of.

Dumping fuel is a VERY important process.

If you land above your maximum weight, the momentum forces upon touchdown can cause damage to the airframe.

Dumping fuel is necessary to get the weight below maximum.

Only the N153 ship remains on GIG (on VEM MHRO facility)

I thought the same, never imagine this nowadays, but it seems it was a protective measure, may be with no purpose. Thanks god no injuries and the plane was only damaged on the engine. I will try to take a picture during the weekend.
