Second A380 For SIA Rolls Out Without Tail Livery

Fri Jul 14, 2006 11:06 pm

Picture: Second Airbus A380 for SIA rolls out without tail livery, prompting 'special edition' colour scheme rumours

flightglobal.com has obtained images of the second Airbus A380 for Singapore Airlines (SIA), which has recently been handed over to the flight test team in Toulouse, which shows the aircraft without the carrier's tail art (pictured below).

Interesting to see what the test results will show for actual performance. Has anyone seen anything on the actual numbers yer for CASM/fuel burn etc?

What happened to the one with the gold tail? Or is this the same MSN? I thought that one was expected to appear in some sort of SQ special scheme.

A change of livery? Updating its brand finally?

I thought the tail has to be painted before it goes to the test flight team to balance the weight of the tail when inflight? What is going on here???

So what is it now?

We have tails with an SIA Birdy that is too high.

We have tails with an SIA Birdy at 'normal' positioning.

And one tail without an SIA Birdy.

Maybe it's a mystery. Oooooooooooh

I have a question about the last statement at the end of the article, which says the following:

Fair Use Excerpt

Quote:
SIA has celebrated its fleet choices previously, giving monikers to its aircraft such as Megatop for its Boeing 747-400s, Jubilee for its 777s and the now-defunct Leadership for its A340-500s. Each of these aircraft types has been accompanied by a one-off paint scheme.

Why does it say the "now-defunct Leadership for its A340-500"? Weren't all the names taken out? or just from the A340-500? or are the A340-500s defunct? Anyways... and can someone place the picture? because for some reason I can't seem to download it in flightinternational.com

They have to paint the rudder (for balancing issues) before they add it to the vertical stabilizer, but they do not have to paint the entire vertical stabilizer.

So if the rudder is white, then SQ's new paint scheme will be at least partially white in the vertical stabilizer area.

I believe mega top and Jubilee have also been dropped.

Bear in mind that next year, SQ will celebrate their 60th anniversary, so there's always the possibility of a special livery for the occasion as they did in 1997 for their 50th anniversary. That is - if they've gotten over their "superstition" about Special liveries after the Taipei crash.

I do not think that it will be a special livery for the A380 launch though as the first aircraft already has a tail fin with the normal logo on it.

Not been keeping out that much with the test program but could the first two still be in the test program when service starts and number 3 be the first one in revenue? Have they announced the sked out that far? just a thought.

Popular belief here on a.net, but disputed by the facts. Boeing indeed paints the rudder and then attaches it to an unpainted vertical stabilizer, but Airbus routinely don't. They either paint the entire tail:

Well I only worked for Boeing, not Airbus, so I admit I am only familiar with Boeing's operations.  Smile
