With competitors like Ryanair and after 9/11 the airline suffered and Willie Walsh saved the airline by turning it into a "low fares, way better" airline, since then Willie Walsh has left EI and joined BA and now we have Dermot Mannion in control and in my eyes he is already a success for EI because he has ordered new much needed A330s, lunched flights to Dubai and now he has succeeded in getting the Irish Government to privatize the airline. I think both EI and OW thought it best that the airline flys on its own but now EK are taking an interest! Also you must remember EI have Premier class on long-haul and it continues to be a good service even if the seats and IFE need an upgrade. EI on short haul does resemble a low fares airline but the food is good (even if you have to pay for it) and the new leather seats are very comfy!

There was something in the news recently about EI not wanting to pay the IT costs of upgrading their systems to talk to the three newest oneworld carriers, and that their business model of point-to-point LCC flights didn't fit in with moving premium passengers around the globe.

That's a pretty feeble reason. They should have migrated to a proper system years ago.

Good, may be an overstatement. I flew Premier class last Monday and it was fair at best, certainly not worth $3000 return JFK-DUB. Luckily I used frequent flyer miles.

I kinda hope that with Willie Walsh joining BA that he will not go the same way and make BA no frills although I fear this could be the case (BA Connect springs to mind)

I was on a flight to DXB so it is possible EI were out to impress on this new route. It will be getting an upgrade with new seats, new menu, new IFE and a better service overall.
The short-haul product is very good for a low fares airline, I'm sure anyone on A.net who has flown EI recently would agree.

Yes, it is.

Overall, I think EI's best attributes are it's reputation (70 years experience) and safety record. Service on some flights can be excellent, while on others fair, so it's not always consistent, the safety record on the other hand; is.

EI have many challenges facing them as they privatise and participate in the Open Skies agreement with the U.S. Let's hope that they continue to be successful.

Is it official that Aer Lingus is out of OneWorld? They are still on the one world web site.

They officially depart the alliance in early 2007, they will continue to be members until then. They will keep close alliance with certain members, especially BA. Look on the OW website for official confirmation in the press release section or the Ei site. It is also available on certain members of the alliances' sites!

They had to become a LCC because of Ryanair and other LCC's.

With a relative small transcontinental business, they have to compete locally with LCC Ryanair and others.

While the alliances tout "enhanced revenues" to the members, the programs are expensive to maintain.

EI is going for the lowest cost operation possible to compete in its local markets.
Tired of airline bankruptcies....EA/PA/TW and finally DL.

Sad to see them leave as I used to take their flights between LHR & DUB on an RTW ticket just because I enjoyed it so much.

I wish them well in the future.
