Boeing Is 90 Years Old On July 15th

Sat Jul 15, 2006 4:05 am

Boeing turns 90 tomorrow (Saturday).

A Vision Realized
Excerpt:
On July 15, 1916, "the 21 people Bill Boeing employed to build and maintain his two B&W airplanes became employees of Pacific Aero Products Company. A year later, the company would have a more familiar name: Boeing Airplane Company."

This is a much bigger deal than many might realise. There were a lot of ups and downs in those 90 years.

To execute with excellence and sustain leadership in this difficult industry for 90 years is certainly an achievement.

Congratulations to Boeing. Here's to 90 more!

The photo was taken in 1922. The woman in the shot is Helen Holcombe, Boeing's first woman engineer, who started in 1917.

Hi,

Congratulations, Boeing. And a big  champagne  for the whole workforce.
Definitively a flag ship for the US! 90 Years is pretty amazing for an aircraft designer.

I'm very happy to see Boeing back on it roots: innovation. It works, for sure!

Raphael

Congratulations Boeing! It's uncommon for a company to make it 90 years. It's even more uncommon for a company to make it 90 years and still be a dominant player in the same market.

Do you mean the man or the Company?

In the case of the Company, one thing that comes to mind is the anti-skid brake for the B-47. The design was then licensed to Hydro-Aire for production.

Citing this example avoids all the nasty arguments about who invented the swept wing, the podded jet engine etc. While Boeing did not necessarily invent these types of items, they did exploit them sooner and more effectively than their competition.

Innovation often means effective integration, something Boeing now says is its primary strength, ie large scale systems integration.

Why not? In fact I assume they will congratulate Boeing; it's perfectly normal in the business world. And if they don't they will wait for another 10 years.
