South African Ordered 2 E170

Sat Jul 15, 2006 6:06 pm

Just a quick note that South African Airlink just ordered 2 Embraer 170, and cancelled the remaining of E135 on order.

More info just go to the www.embraer.com and take a look at

EMBRAER REPORTS SECOND QUARTER 2006 DELIVERIES AND TOTAL COMPANY BACKLOG

Great news for both, but i don't see the sense of it since 2 aircraft of one type is a bit un-economical...

Also i just saw the Lineage 1000, a private plane based on the EMB-190 right? since when is it launched? i think this is a plane with great potention given the fuel burn, the range, and the space it offers... just perfect for company's wich need to send a couple of employee's to the other side of the country, or to another country.

My guess is Antananarivo in Madagascar & Ndola, Zambia. New routes proposed to Lusaka and Harare. Could also possibly be used internally for Jnb/George.

How long do these flights take?

Aren't these places already served by South African? Are they going to be changed to E170's because loads are not good?

Just a small side note, South African and South African Airlink are two different companies ...

No offence, but the airline's name changed from SA Airlink to Airlink in January 2006. It is a private company that has no actual ties with South African Airways; other than the use of the SA designator, being a feeder airline for South African Airways on some routes and their participation in the South African Airways Voyager FF Program.

IMMHO the E170's should be more economical than the 732's they currently use on the JNB-TNR-JNB route.

JNB-TNR (Antananarivo) = 03h20min
JNB-NLA (Ndola) = 02h20min

Both TNR and NLA are served by Airlink only and not South African Airways. IIRC, neither one of these destinations have been served by SA in the past, however I may be incorrect.

Airlink are planning to expand their route system to HRE and LUN (Lusaka) during 2006.

Absolutely correct, but as long as they carry a SA flight number, I still would call them SA Airlink even the official name is only Airlink.

They have to start somewhere. They already have 5 135s so it's not as if Embraer is new in this market.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Airlink ordered 20x E135's, with 5 planes delivered thus far.

So they canceled 15 E135s and ordered 2 E170s? Not good news for RR which stands to lose orders on 30 engines!  ouch
On the other hand, I suspect Airlink has more E Jets in mind....

That's a huge cancellation don't you think? And I am sure order wise, 15x 135s is not equal to 2x 170s. So what's with the rest?
