Ciskei International Airways

This one came up in a discussion on Convairs last month:
http://www.airliners.net/discussions/general_aviation/read.main/70134/

Ciskei International Airways was the last operator of the last airworthy CV-990A, now in storage at El Paso, Texas (and still painted in their colors). I gave a brief history of Ciskei International Airways in that discussion, which I'll repeat here, with the additional info that JTB106 supplied:

-----------------------------------------------
Ciskei International Airways was a product of a political anomaly in South Africa in the 1980's, and was headquartered at Bisho Airport, near the coastal city of East London.

Besides CV-990A #24 - N8357C (cn 24) - Ciskei Int'l Airways also acquired a CV-880 at the same time (c.1987) - N88CH (cn 58). The airline never operated commercially, and the two airliners stood parked at Bisho Airport for several years, before #24 made its escape to Belgium, and then on to El Paso.

The 880 stayed on for a few years until bought by an East London resident, who had the aircraft transported the 50-or-so kilometres to his house in East London. It was mounted in his garden, and is now used as a restaurant for wedding receptions, etc.

The CV990 you mention is indeed a beauty, and like many civil airplane enthusiasts, I hope to see this plane fully restored. The livery on '57 Charlie you mention was from Denver Ports of Call, a US travel club of the 1970s and 1980s before ceasing operations. The venerable Convairs were replaced by 707-123s.
