Airline Delay Codes

Sun Jul 16, 2006 3:53 am

Just trying to satisfy my curiosity monkey here.....I assume that airlines' delay codes vary from airline to airline.
Delta, and all Delta Connection flights, use the same delay codes, but I assume that a similarly delayed flight on another carrier would be coded differently?

For example:
Aircraft Maintenance: 03A
Crew late from late inbnd flight: 08J
ATC enroute or at destination: 14B
and so on (there are hundreds of codes...)

Anyone have any insight to this?

Most airlines use the IATA standard as base for their delay codes. Most use the numerical codes, but some prefer the alphabetical.
This is IATA's official code sheet:

Correct, I do believe they vary airline to airline. For example at YX, some of our delay codes are:

*03A- ATC/Gate Hold
*61P- Delay- Gate, ticket counter
*67P- Delay- Ramp

Most of our codes are a number followed by and A, and M or a P. We only have a handful of codes that we use on a regular basis (probably about 20).
The New American is arriving.

Well, some of those explanations look similar, but Delta's codes are much more specific. There are delay code grounds (01-22) and then there are sub-groups.
For example, group 08 is pilot delays:
08B - Crew scheduling error
08F - Late Check-in
08J - Crew late from delayed inbnd flight
08M - Late completion of manifest and/or checklist

Awesome. We have probably 200 codes (I've never actually counted all of them), but we also generally only use a handful on a regular basis:

03A - Maintenance
06G - Delayed inbnd from upline ATC
06H - Delayed inbnd from upline maintenance
12A - Predetermined online connection hold
12B - Predetermined interline connection hold
14B - ATC delay enroute or at destination
etc....you probably get the picture

At my airline, here are a few of my more frequent delay codes. We use a three letter code for our delays...

PRF- Crew Rest
MOM- Non Scheduled Maintenance
LQ_- Late Arriving Equipment
SSS- Default Station Delay
PAS- Passenger Accomodation
SRS- Security Screening
IPS- Irregular Procedure- Station
IPF- Irregular Procedure- Pilot
FDI- Flight Attendant Delay
ASOS... Another Shi#y Observation Station

KL uses the IATA-codes as listed in reply 1.

This is the top 3 (not officially, just by my own experience)

1. code 81/89 ATC
2. code 03 missing checked-in passenger at the gate (KL code only)
3. code 41 technical problem (KLC F50/70/100 !!!)

Can you get us some more 3-letter codes?

I've seen ATA, IRM and LND. Not sure whats those mean.
