When Did Air California First Get 737s?

Sun Jul 16, 2006 8:14 am

Air California started with Electras in ... 1968, was it? Now somebody in the other thread says there's a pic of a 737-159 in Air California paint in 1968. How long did they fly Electras (originally, that is-- not the TVL flights later)? When did they start DC-9s and when 737s?

They started in 1967 with Electras and quickly moved to 737's in 1968. I don't recall the Electras staying on non-TVL flights, except to open up OAK-SNA. SFO-SNA was all jet within 1968. Anyone else remember the original livery with the black nose?

MD-80's and BAe-146's came in after the 1981 name change and new AirCal livery. I don't recall the exact dates, but ~1984 seems plausible.

The 9/68 timetable shows DC-9s (were they -30s?) SNA-SFO and Electras to OAK and SJC.

I never recall DC-9's for Air California at that time, but anything's possible, of course. Their timetable a month later clearly shows a 737 in the old black-nosed livery.
