DL Reduces ATL-EDI This Winter 5X Weekly

Sun Jul 16, 2006 1:26 pm

Looks like DL will do (hopefully) just a seasonal reduction in service to EDI this winter. Looks like the flight will operate on Sun, Mon, Wed, Thu, & Fri. This is a great flight for Scotland and I hope it continues to perform for DL. I have flown on this flight and it was full both ways. Flights this week alone have been oversold and it looks like the bookings for the rest of the summer season looks strong! Good luck DL, just bring ATL-GLA NEXT!!!!

Bring on the ex-TWA AA 752s! They should work on such a route!

Boy I hope not!!! I like the widebody 763 for this route! If DL were to change it to the 752 it would have to switch the service to JFK (No thanks!!!). I'll take the 5X weekly from ATL over daily 752 from JFK!

This should really be no surprise. A lot of DL's European networks do not operate daily in the winter. In fact, I am surprised it is not 3x or 4x.

Indeed. But the schedule is not fully finalised yet, as I can't imagine DL would keep ATL-EDI at 5x weekly, when routes like JFK-ATH/IST only have 3-4x weekly service.

I can't see the 757s on ATL-EDI - leaving aside the question of whether pax want to be on a narrowbody for that length of time - I dont think that those a/c have the 'legs' to do the sector ...anybody know for sure

Hi DAL767400ER, is there any word on the winter frequency of JFK-IST? Going daily at last?

No, JFK-IST will be 4x weekly this winter.

This seasonal reduction has been in the schedule since the beginning of the service; it was never intended to operate daily in the winter. That being said, I won't be surprised if it gets further reduced during the deep winter period when transatlantic travel is at its lowest level (late January/early Feb) if the subsidies deal with the Scots allow it.

A lot of routes will be reduced to 4-5x weekly, including some that haven't before, like ATL-MAD. ATL-CPH and ATL-DUS are also reduced.

I believe DL has some marketing support on ATL-EDI in which some Scottish group is requiring that DL maintain a certain level of ops through the winter in order to get the money. If true, DL is probably operating the flight more than it otherwise would but is obviously getting financial support that offsets if not surpasses the increased costs through the winter.

ATL-CPH and -DUS are both new routes so there is no precedent for how they will be operated during the winter.

ATL-MAD might be reduced more than usual because JFK-MAD and JFK-BCN will remain as separate flights through the winter while they have been joined together as a wrap around flight in the past.

This has been on the cards for a while.

Indeed, but the requirement is a minimum of 3x weekly year round, although if I remember rightly CO operated 5x weekly during their first winter at EDI having also received funding.

CAA provisional stats show an average load factor of 79% for the route in June, EDI's cargo figures rocketed in June too so I presume it is carrying a fair bit of cargo, it certainly looks to be from the few times I've seen them off-loading it.

Same thing when DL used to have service to ARN; there was reduced service during the winter months. I think it is very vise decision as the demand from Scandinavia to the USA is not so high during the winter. 5 x week is ideal as it still can be marketed as daily service ( D x 2/6 for CPH).

Yes, overall, DL's US-Spain capacity this winter will be up slightly compared to last year, with 15 weeklies each way (5x weekly each for ATL-MAD, JFK-MAD, JFK-BCN) versus 14 last year (7x ATL-MAD and 7x JFK-BCN-MAD-JFK)
