Info. On PSA Out Of DAY

Mon Jul 17, 2006 3:19 pm

Hello,
Slightly new to this board.... I was wondering if anyone has any information about PSA Airlines. I live in Ohio and I know they have a maintenance base at DAY. I'm going to apply for an A&P position with them. I just wanted to see if anyone had any information or experience with them? Are they generally a good employer? Do they hire "rookies"? From what little I have read they seem good.

Thanks for any help!!
Mike

I was with PSA very briefly a few months ago and quit because I couldn't stand the company. In typical US Airways fashion the management is patriarchal and arrogant. The only way to be noticed is to be part of the "good ole' boys". There is no room for individualism or expression. Hopefully HP's relaxed style will end that. When people at PSA talked about the merger I noticed they would get a little nervous. I think they know the suit-and-tie days are coming to an end.

HP's style will end that, but it will take time. Enough time for those types to all retire, because their unions are just too strong, and misguided. So it will be a gradual process.

Rumors are that PSA is locating all major maintenance to CLT and that DAY will eventually close, at least that was the rumor when I was there. I know they were also talking about closing DAY as a crew base as well.

What station were you at, PIT? I was there for about a week and a half last March and hated it. Loved the computer training (I was intially trained on SABRE at travel school) but realized it was a dead-end after one day on the ramp. I know of HP's style, but they're also very cheap. Look at how many new EAS routes Mesa has applied for recently. I remember Siegel was talking about getting Mesa out of the US Airways Express group of carriers a few years ago. Funny how fast things change, isn't it?

The DAY ops were a mess for a long time. I can tell you from previous expereince (having flown many times on them) that the old DO-328 props were always delayed due to mx or having to operate at limited weights. They were always bumping pax due to "overweight restrictions".

Then they switched to the CRJ's and that has helped in both departments. They also moved to upstairs gate space on concourse B and that helped a lot with the new ramps as opposed to walking outside to get onto the planes. The old space on the first floor was cramped, unorganized and a hell hole.

All in all, from the pax standpoint, they have moved up the food chain and have the second highest number of pax being flown out of Dayton at this time.

As far as working for them, I have no idea. As a pax, I thought the employees were usually pretty grumpy.

Oh, yeah, HP is just being so warm-and-cuddly with PSA right now, playing the whipsaw game big-time with the CRJ-900s.  Yeah sure

Haven't heard anything about CLT, what I've heard is that they're looking at building a hangar at TYS, especially if PSA gets the CRJ-900s.

If PSA doesn't get the CRJ-900s, I wouldn't be surprised to see the DAY crew base close, but the maintenance base should remain open, similar to what happened at CAK. (I wouldn't be surprised, but I'd still think it unlikely, and that all of DAY should remain open.)

Er, care to explain what exactly Air Midwest applying for EAS routes has to do with HP being cheap?  Yeah sure

I could've sworn Ornstein wanted out of the EAS/BE1 game completely a few years ago. What made Mesa change their minds? Just curious mind you.

PSA will hire "rookies". In fact, rookies are probably who they prefer (since $ is all they look at). They do a lot a mx out of DAY. I believe they have 4 aircraft in each night and all of the a.d. and additional mx is done during the day. I think it would be a good place for you to start. Good luck in the interview. BTW, if you get the job keep your head up and do not let the culture contaminate you

He wanted to stop losing millions of dollars on their BE1 ops, which they've done, by restructuring their route system and slashing their fleet in half. Air Midwest should be profitable by the end of this year.

And I still don't see what that has to do with HP being cheap.

Oddly enough, from what I've heard, ZV is going to stop shrinking and pick up some more B1900s to cover all the new EAS flying they're winning... and perhaps some other routes as well...
USAir A321 service now departing for SFO with fuel stops in CAK, COS and RNO. Enjoy your flight.

Thanks for the update. I had not heard. The quote about HP being cheap was told to me by a friend of mine at US Airways. Let's let bygones be bygones and just wait and see how this all pans out, OK?  Wink

I lived and worked there for over a year. (Completely just my opinion coming up) I hated it and we lost alot of people that moved there too for the same reasons. they just didn't like it. Beautiful place but a bunch of us called it the Black Hole! Anyway........

I have an old supervisor I worked for that is now a supervisor there. . . He likes PSA alot. Granted he did work for Piedmont before and I think they are ran the same style so he is used to it. Good Luck Man!!!! Hope all goes well let us know how it goes.

Got a call this morning from PSA.......

GOT THE JOB!

I was kind of shocked. The interview went pretty good, but they didn't even want to talk about any of my experience (well the very little I have). My father is an IA A&P for Buisness Aircraft Group (BAG) out of Cleveland so I have a litttle line/checks experience on Citations.

They mostly wanted to know why I wanted to work for them, what kind of worker am I, how co-workers would speak of me, and what I knew about PSA.

Of course I got the graveyard shift. But that is fine with me. Its 9pm-7am. Mostly doing A-checks and other overnight mx. 4 ten hour days with 3 days off, plus overtime I'm sure.

Well, I'm quite excited! I can't wait to learn all about the CRJ's! It's also kind of strange. I've been going to school and working hard for the last 3 years and the time has come to move out on my own and start my career.

I was wondering if there is a good place for spotting in DAY. Do you have any suggestions?

DAY has a ridiculously large airport so spotting is tough, but when the winds are right there is one place I found. Take Dixie Dr. going north and you'll find some good spots to pull over and watch planes land.

Also if you go to Northwoods Blvd to the Airshow entrance the free parking lot
there is right on final to the main runway....

Congrats Throttlejockey! I was trying to log onto A.Net to tell you to ignore some of the earlier posters complaints. Those who have problems usually bring it on themselves.  Wink As long as you are willing to learn and willing to work, you'll do just fine. I'll be seeing you in several of my classes soon. Welcome to PSA!  thumbsup

Thanks guys! I will check out the spots you mentioned at DAY. I live near Cincinnati, so I normally go to CVG. Next week I'll be in DAY for the airshow, Blue Angels are in town - that should be fun!
