ILFC Orders RR Trent-1000 For B787s

Mon Jul 17, 2006 6:22 pm

Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines have been chosen by International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC), the world's largest aircraft leasing company, to power up to 20 firm and option Boeing 787 Dreamliners in a deal potentially worth $600 million at list prices.

Seems that all of ILFCs firm orders have been covered by this agreement including their 4 options which are reported to be firmed by ILFC at some point during Farnborough.

ILFC Orders RR Trent-1000 For B787s

This is yet another vote of confidence towards the Trent family of power plants. Congratulations to both ILFC and RR and of course Boeing for those 4 extra B787 orders to be signed soon.

ILFC Orders RR Trent-1000 For B787s

This is great for RR. Since I expect ILFC to keep ordering the 787, this should be a nice long term win.

However... do recall swapping engines on the 787 is *far* easier than any other airliner (per the lessors demands). Why? The lessors were tired of getting stuck with airframes that had low demand due to not having the customers preference of engine (e.g., the 777).

I don't believe NZ has firmed up it's engine choice for it's 787-9's; this might be a strong indicator of what they will do since there has been conjecture that they might lease some 787-8's , if so, very likely from ILFC.

Yes, that's fine. If a customer wants to lease ILFCs 787s with GeNX engines, just buy GeNX powerplants and hang them on the Dreamliners. But, wait a moment: what to do the Trents and how to pay for the GeNX engines?

As there is a gigantic financial and leasing company called, um, GE, it is slightly possible that they might specifiy, ahem, GE engines on their 787s  Wink

I wonder if ILFC will assume that GE will corner a lot of the GE powered market going forward. when planning future orders?

Where does this put RR in terms of numbers vs GENx on this airframe?

From Wikipedia:

GEnX: 121
Trent: 109

The big fight will be which powerplant is chosen by Qantas. Seems both GE and Rolls Royce are sharing the 787's success. Terrific news! I'm wondering if AeroMexico's leased 787s are included in this deal?

I'm pretty sure they've settled on the RR - http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/2006/q2/060511d_nr.html

Trent engines are just warmed over RB211 engines with no major design changes and their fuel burn will be higher than the GEnx.

At least GEnx engines are revolutionary with composite fan frames and composite fan blades with titanium leading edges. These blades have been well proven in the -90 series.

The Chinese orders will be interesting too. RR I believe won all the A330 orders, but will the 787s all go to one supplier or will they be shared?

Check this out:

Looks like ILFC is also ordering GEnx for some of their 787's. Which makes sense since they are a leasing company and they would want to be flexible for their various customers with different engine preferences.

Surely, if the GEnx are as revolutionary as you state, then by the definition of the word revolutionary, we wouldn't have already seen these blades proving themselves previously?

Are we to say the GEnx is a warmed over GE90 as well?

The GEnx will have a composite fan case and a new combustor.

So basically, a warmed over GE90, with a couple of flashy features with negligible effect upon SFC ? And where are the revolutionary features? (As far as I know, neither fancases nor combustors rotate.)
