India And Singapore Revise Bilateral

The authorities met in Singapore on the 11th and 12th of July. Here's what was signed off:

  • Designated airlines of Singapore have unlimited access to all 18 points in India (Including COK and TRV)
  • Designated airlines of India have unlimited access from the 18 points in India to Singapore
  • Designated airlines on either side shall be entitled to operate all-cargo services with no limitation on frequency, routing and capacity with any type of aircraft, with full 3rd, 4th and 5th freedom traffic rights
  • Meet within 6 months to sort out enhancement of 3rd/4th/5th freedom traffic rights, and code share arrangements

Good news for both India & Singapore!

Seems fairly liberal - what sort of enhancements would be needed?

Regarding the 'designated airlines' - are ownership and control provisions retained? i.e. Airlines must be substantially owned and effectively controlled by nationals of the respective countries?

This is great - this sounds like defacto open skies to me! I hope now SQ goes double daily to MAA.

Nice for both countries... AI and 9W just need all those planes they ordered to start utilizing their traffic rights to their fullest.

Wow. That's one that I didn't see coming. Very quick considering they only both recently revised an existing bilateral.

Very interesting.

Kudos to the Republic of Singapore and India for taking another step towards removing archaic government protectionism and restrictions on airlines!

Agree, but a bigger kudos (if thats' possible) had they done away with ownership and control restrictions.

so finally we will get to see flights to SYD/MEL via SIN. Similar agreement is needed with HKG to reach US west cost.

ok, found the link http://dgca.gov.in/bilateral/Singa0606.pdf

The 18 destinations don't include BOM, DEL, HYD, CCU, BLR or MAA. The only progress seems to be on the cargo side

I would like that too, but why would SQ do that? Is there that much demand here?

Nevertheless, a daytime flight leaving MAA in the am would be nice.

They do have a non-stop to LAX from SIN. Cathay connects more points on US west coast than does Singapore. Furthermore, a route like MAA-HKG-LAX would be no more than 21-23 hours, both ways. MAA-SIN-LAX is likely to be longer by at least two hours.

It's now clear that it's not an Open Skies for the Indian metros, only for the 18 secondary cities

    I've tried to highlight the cities that IMO have potential for flights to/from SIN.


The metros:

  • Delhi - 2 Units/week
  • Mumbai - 4.5 Units/week
  • Chennai - 1650 Seats/week
  • Bangalore - 5.95 Units/week
  • Hyderabad - 3.2 Units/week
  • Kolkata - 2.6 Units/week + 5 Units

1 Unit => 1 747 Pax config

In addition there's a pool of 12 Units/week that can be utilized across any of these cities.

Pune is noticable in it's absense. Anyone knows why?

Is this for regular pax traffic or for cargo ops?

Are they sure? It was being said Govt of India would not want ot make IXZ an International Airport due to security and environmental concerns. The non-Indians require an ILP even today.

What sort of pax traffic they are expecting? It has to be tourists. Not sure how good it would be for this fragile place. Not sure whether the locals want it to be like another Thai resort  Wink

Mangalore (IXE) is missing while Calicut has made it to that list!

BTW, how is SQ's ATQ route doing?

The treaty has IXZ available for Pax traffic (unlimited frequencies/capacity). Now the fine print might state (Subject to the govt. setting up immigrations/customs), but that's the Indian govt. for you!
