While the 787 is definitely not only a great airliner, also a great selling one, that headline is pure press drivel. Sure they talk about selling 1000s...

Look at a car dealer. It's easier to sell a car, but to how many people does one have to talk to just to sell an Audi, or a Beemer, or a Caddy?

Considering that highly successful Boeing models have taken years to reach the 1,000 airframe mark, I'm inclined to think this headline is a bit of an exaggeration. I have no doubt that the 787 will surpass 1,000 airframes in its lifetime, but I think it's a bit early to be throwing that number around.

Then again, they're just "in talks"... Wink

Sure they are just in talks. Airbus is probably in talks about 600 more 380s, but those duscussions might be very one-sided, meaning sales-talk by Airbus.
So the deal with Boeing. They sure want and better should pitch their product towards the airlines...
And even if they can finalize only 100 of them - that's still quite a thing then...

In the past with the 787 boeing when boeing have talked about the numbers they have been for proposals, put out at airlines request.

If boeing has proposals out for 1000 787 thn you can expect a good pick up rate~ maybe 50%

On the other hand it could just be the media.

I think Boeing will almost certainly sell 1000 more 787's to 30 airlines. Question is: when?

Airbus could probably also say that they are talking to 30 airlines about sales of 300/400/500 A350's.

Quoting FCKC (Thread starter):
1000 more 787s with 30 airlines.

Wow, even if only half of them would order it very impressive.
Any idea which are the prospective customers ? I guess they are all new customers and no additional orders from existing customers.

I would say from the US

AA; Delta; United - provided that they are in the condition to acquire new
planes, but otherwise if they have to at some point in
order to stay compeitive

Europe - As far as the majors are concerned BA, LH and maybe AF
But either LH or AF will go for the A350 or take both
(AF ?), maybe Austrian Czeque and Malev. Swiss is an
option if LH goes for the 787

Asia and
Middle East- El Al, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, Thai, Cathay, Asiana
..........
It will forever be a McDonnell Douglas MD 80 , Boeing MD 80 sounds so wrong

There might be some potential orders at stake (see Qatar and the previously anounced order for 20x 777..) due to political reasons.
People that invest millions in tourist-infrastructure in Lebanon (like Qatar )don't like to see their investment go out in flames.
But it is fair to assume that the 787 will be a cash-cow for Boeing - China being ,together with US carriers, the largest market.
Once the A350 has received officially green light to be quoted and offered(industrial launch ),the 787 will -regardless of Randy 's Blog- be challenged .
Qatar should then confirm their choice to order the A350 as would Emirates.
Interesting will be the reaction from Lufhansa and Air France !
It is defenitely an aircraft designed based on feed-back from the major carriers including those two-so the next months will be extremely tense for the Airbus sales-team!

Indeed, when you see the critism that LH did on both the 787 and the A350 the new A350 seems to be tailor made for them.
On the other hand Lufthansa was from the very beginning involved in the 787 program and Boeing puts a lot of effort in it to win them back as a customer
and together with EK and BA LH was one of the airlines that pushed Boeing to develop the 787-10.
LH also gave in a proposal on how they would like to have the 787 if they would order it and joined other Star Alliance members in a design team that is working on common features on the 787.
I guess another big factor is time, if LH really can not wait an order for the 787 is certain. Besides LH wants to keep a mixed Airbus/Boeing fleet, while AF is a big 777 customer LH has not placed an order for new Boeing aircraft for some time so it is about time for them to place an order in Seattle/Chicago.

Boeign said that they're talking repeat: TALKING to 30 customers for up to 1000 787s. They acknowledge that they will not winn all 1000 orders. They also expected that Airbus would put up a formidable competitor to the 787 so they're certainly not taking anything for granted.

Great news, but to be expected. I think this is the first warning that the American market is about to re-emerge in a huge way for the orders battle. Remember that the transatlantic markets, and the US domestic markets formed the backbone of the early 757/767 orders. These planes are going to need replacement soon. In addition the success that DL, CO and UA have had shifting all of their widebodies to international service and restricting domestic traffic to 320s and 737s will also create a demand for more widebodies for international traffic.

I think Airbus is going to have a good competitor in their newest 350, but right now the name of the game is going to be available production slots for the 787. I believe that Boeing will be able to fill all slots up to 2012 and that competition is going to increase on deliveries after that.

By 2012, however, the 787 will have been enhanced, providing a moving target for Airbus to go against. The potential of a second 787 production line is also interesting, even if they have delayed a decision on that for a year.

If Airbus doesn't have to respond to a Y1 release during their most intense 350 development period then I believe the current 350 will be a very good plane. It's going to be an interesting battle to watch.

Boeing is not Airbus, as a company, they are independent from the Government of the United States. On top of that, last I checked there was no state named Isreal in the United States. The United States keeps monies that flow to the middle east roughly equal, ie Egypt takes as much as Isreal does.

Boeing was pretty explicit that they were just talking to customers for up to 1000 787s. Imagine what Leahy would have said had it been Airbus talking to 30 customers for up to 1000 350s...

The other question is: How quickly?

At the current pace, it ain't going to take them 10 years. And if the USAF drops the KC767 malarkey and begins to look at the 787 as a KC135 replacement............wow!
