Where Do KLM 772's Fly?

Wed Jul 19, 2006 8:44 am

Hello, all.

Just out of curiousity, Where do KLM 777-200ER's fly? I know they route AMS-JFK, and sometimes AMS-YYZ (atleast previously), but what other routes typically are flown by a 772 for KLM? Thanks in advance.

-Ryan

sorry if this has been discussed.

Is this a sub route for the 772? I thought EWR was a 767 route?

KL is flying A332 and on a few days a week a second flight with a 772 into EWR this summer.

Hope both flights are successful so that they do it again next summer!

Glad to hear. Being that I am not much of a fan of the Boeing 767 .. I am glad to see that they are flying more 772s to EWR during the summer months along with the 330. I wish this was a year-round event.

DAR and JRO are currently operated with B772 but that flight will revert back to MD11 for the winter.

DEL is currently not operated with B772 but with MD11, but will once again receive the B772 from the winter onward.

YYZ is currently operated with B744 pax version, and only occasionally received the B772. However, YYZ is set to be an all B772 destination next winter.

PVG is not receiving any more B772. It is operated uniquely with B74E.

NRT and CAI are mixed destinations. Apart from the B772, KLM also operates the MD11 to CAI and the B744/B74E to NRT.

EWR received two weekly B772 flights, which are extra seasonal late evening flights.

JFK gets an all B772 service on KL641/642, whereas KL643/644 operates the B772 only twice weekly.

SFO is not currently operated with the B772, but with the MD11. There are no plans for SFO to receive the B772 in the foreseeable future.

ACC, not mentioned in the list, receives a daily B772 from AMS as KL589/590.

There are no plans I know of to deploy the B772 on the daily AMS-ORD route. The increase from 280-seat B74E to the 327-seat B772 would mean a considerable capacity increase on the route, which the performance of that route doesn't warrant, not to mention that KLM needs the B74E for cargo its space. As far as I know, ORD will stay B74E for quite some time to come.

Don't forget DXB also gets the 777. Also... United flies to AMS from ORD and I know that ORD is an important cargo hub for KLM. Any chance of KL going daily double to ORD?

I was searching on www.kayak.com, for an ORD-FCO flight. One option was KLM and it was most defintely on a Triple 7. I am truly sorry that the date I searched for escapes me, but I know it was during a period when demand for European travel somewhat wavers. I was in disbelief as well, but yes, I saw 777.

There has been talk by AF/KL replacing single daily AMS-LAX B747 with double daily "smaller" aircraft in the future. KLM for a little while in past years did operate a 2nd LAX flight on certain days to connect to different banks at its AMS hub.

Certainly the 777 or MD-11 would qualify being the "smaller" equipment their sales office makes mention of.

Suppose it would be interesting having 4 daily AF/KL 777s to LAX, while providing great connection opportunities at AMS and CDG.

The route is planned to stay with A343, but there will be reduction in frequency for the winter from daily to 6 times weekly. ORD is not the best performer for Air France.

That was last summer. For the current summer schedule KLM has decided to stick with the MD11 and that is likely to remain so for the next winter schedule as well.

There is talk of reinforcing a couple of well performing destinations, including LAX and HKG, with additional seasonal frequencies. It is likely that the A332 would be used for such additional frequencies. KLM is currently planning to install crew rest areas in the A332 - they will be bunks located in the cargo hold - so as to be able to deploy the A332 on routes with a block time of over 11 hours.

I stand corrected on this one. And at the same time, I am in disbelief. I have access to quite some KLM related info, but I had never read or heard anything pertaining to the deployment of the B772 to ORD next summer. Yet, the flight is currently loaded with the B772. Many things can still change though. At this moment, not even KLM's winter schedule has been finalized, let alone next year's summer program.

KLM do seem to have a lot of overlap in their long haul fleets...

MD-11
767-300
777-200
A330-200

All of these aircrafts do have some degree of overlapping, with range, capability and payloads.

Not really actually. The 763 is being phased out, so you can delete that one. The a332 carries 251 pax, the MD11 282 pax and the 772 321 pax. So they are all a different category. BTW the 74E carries 280 pax and the 744 420 pax.

KLM uses a 74E combi into LAX with a amx pAX load of about 280. The all passenger 777 has a PAX load of about 325. The MD11 has about the same PAX count as the 74E. So, if they decide to add a second flight, they are actually keeping the same PAX numbers as the MD11 and adding capacity with the 777. I guess the only reason they would be replacing the 74E is because cargo volume has dropped off.

I'm so upset!!! I booked a flight JFK - AMS and back on KL for Sept., and arranged my whole vacation so I could fly on a 744M and then a T7 for the ride back. Now I see they changed the T7 flight to a 744. How easy could it be to try to get on the earlier flight which is a T7. I already will be at JFK while I wait during a 7 hour layover. Has anyone had such luck on an international flight?

I was in the same situation as you, I booked JFK-AMS-MAD-AMS-JFK to be on KLM's new 777-200 back in March 2004 and on my return leg the 777-200 scheduled to fly KL641 went tech so a 747-400 was subbed in.

I know there has been a desire to add a 2nd flight for two summers now. There are some AMS connection which are not optimised with the current schedule for which a later departure would be able to capture.
AF/KL are consolidating and coordinating their position and trying to build upon their LA market strenght by offering connection opportunities to near every European, Middle East and Africa destination they serve via either hub. They already sell mix/match tickets with routings via AMS in one direction and CDG the other.

As far as cargo, KLM ships also on the Martinair MD-11 cargo flights which we see 3-4 times per week. With the loss of Combi capacity, it might be possible for MP to add extra frequencies.

It doesn't look as if the B74E on the traditional KL601/602 run is going anywhere. KLM is merely looking into the possibility of reinforcing the existing schedule during peak periods with additional seasonal frequencies.

Call them and explain the situation, easy as that. Exaggerate, cajole, they might do it free of charge.
Once at the airport it might be more difficult as you'll probably have checked luggage for the later flight? If you carry only hand luggage the gate agent might agree to taking you at the very last moment if there any seats available of course.

RE: Where Do KLM 772's Fly?

Thu Jul 20, 2006 3:27 am

Quoting Laxintl (Reply 29):
There are some AMS connection which are not optimised with the current schedule for which a later departure would be able to capture.

Given the current structure of the KL Schiphol hub, I would say that an earlier AMS departure would actually allow for more connections, and if an additional flight were ever to be established, I would expect it to leave AMS in the 10am outbound bank returning the next day around the same time.

The current KLM LAX schedule does not allow passengers to connect to such longhaul destinations as DEL, HYD, JNB, CPT, DAR, JRO or ACC, which could be overcome by scheduling any extra flights earlier. Of course, all of that depends on what kind of markets KLM is targeting with possible reinforced frequencies. If they are mainly aiming at the European markets, then the flight could very well leave AMS in the 3.30pm longhaul departures bank.

Currently, the 5 remaining B763ERs are deployed on the following routes:

KL409/410 AMS ALA 5 weekly
KL433/434 AMS THR 5 weekly
KL439/440 AMS DMM DOH 4 weekly
KL561/562 AMS EBB 3 weekly
KL577/579 AMS ABV KAN 3 weekly
KL621/622 AMS ATL daily
KL651/652 AMS IAD 4 weekly
KL1007/1008 AMS LHR 4 weekly

By March of next year, all B767s have been cleared from the schedule.

Just out of curiousity, Where do KLM 777-200ER's fly? I know they route AMS-JFK, and sometimes AMS-YYZ (atleast previously), but what other routes typically are flown by a 772 for KLM? Thanks in advance.

I saw a KLM 777/2 boarding for Seoul last week in AMS.

A one time substitution is always possible, but the AMS-ICN is normally uniquely served with the B74E.

All the remaining B763ER routes will eventually get the A332, but some previous B763ER routes have been upgraded to MD11 as well.

are we getting the 777 to ORD because KLM will have a few more T7's in the fleet. I know ORD is 'een belangrijke vrachtpoort" - an important freight port to KLM as lots of flowers and stuff is shipped in from Amsterdam.

that's what the rumors are. hopefully KL sticks with their 772 plan for ORD. I would absolutely love to see it flying in here. I know ORD is an important cargo route for KL...so why not just bring KL as a normal cargo airline? I guess that solves the problems...

Although a 777 would bring a nice change for spotting here at ORD, there is nothing like seeing that big bad boy (747) flying in KLM's great livery. I will miss seeing their 747's dearly. Maybe brand spanking new 747-8's will make their way here down the road.  crossfingers

If KL has decided to begin sending 772's to ORD (next year), I guess that means that AMS-ORD has been getting high density? Also, with the 74E not flying into ORD, will KL decide to go into ORD as a normal cargo airline or what?

As far as I know, the route has been performing well in economy, but, much like counterpart Air France, there has been a lack of high yielding C-class traffic. If the B772ER is indeed deployed, then the number of Y-seats will increase while the number of C-seats will be reduced from 42 to 35 daily.

In another interesting development, it looks like KLM services KL565/566 AMS NBO will lose the B772ER next summer. KLM plans to deploy at full pax B744 on the route next summer. NBO has been receiving the B772 for quite a while now and the deployment of the B744 will boost seat capacity quite a bit.

As for YYZ, KL691/692 AMS YYZ is scheduled to operate with B772ER only for the entire winter, but the B744 full pax seems to be back for next summer.

When is KL getting their 773's?

is it reasonable to send the 773 into ORD than the 772?

The first B773ER is supposed to come as soon as April 2007, and I think we can expect them to be deployed on route that are currently served with the B744 full pax.
