Cyprus Charters For Evacuation

Wed Jul 19, 2006 8:29 pm

Any one any ideas what airlines are providing what aircraft for these flights ?

Are MEA providing their evacuated aircraft ?

Maybe the RAF Tristars or the VC10s ?
How about passengers to the US ? Is this a UA 747 ?
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

Nothing has been announced to the local press. The only report is about Cyprus Airways flights from Damascus which are fully booked.

On BBC News 24 it stated the UK government has chartered a flight bound for Stansted, which is due to leave about 4pm (not sure if that is UKor Cyprus time).

I assume the flight will leave from the UK base on the island - Alkatiri, as this is where the evacuees from Beirut are being kept once arriving in Cyprus.

It also went on to state how the UK Embassy in Cyprus were asking people to pay £290 GBP in order to be flown back to the UK, which caused a lot of tension with these people. They have decided to drop charging people now.

Im pleased to see they have done this, as many people have left in hurry with only the clothes on their back.

The reporter at the port of Limassol, Cyprus, meeting the UK warship bringing the evacuees to Cyprus, stated how the island is struggling, with all these people coming to the island. As it is peak holiday season, all hotels are booked up and flights to/from Cyprus are full with little capacity.

Greece, USA, Italy, France and Scandanavian countries are also using Cyprus as a base to bring people out of the Lebanon, so the islands infastructure is really being put to the test.

I did notice how a lot of air fare availabilty from various european airports to the US with US based airlines is non-existant this weekend !!

So i'm assuming a combination of Peak Season and evacuees filtering into the system is filling the few seats remaining.

Press interviews in the US media with the State Department are implying there will be several charters on behalf of the US a short time after the ship docks...it is leaving Beruit now (13z) so should be something near 22z or just after from Cyprus.

Amen to that! I was there the last 2 summers and it was packed. Good thing I stay with family though.

In any case, the British army has some large stations there, so hopefully the evacuees can be accommodated either there or somewhere in the Greek parts of Cyprus.

My cousin works for Louis Cruise Lines at the Port of Limassol. I'll try to get in touch with her and see if they are doing anything special or if she knows what's going on with the airlines.

True, I just got back from MAN-LCA-MAN (regular holiday charter) and we were watching the helicopters coming in and bringing these folks back under protection of the Marines. Literally it was about 8 people to a helo and 1 suitcase each it was really sad.

I've already tried to volunteer to go out and bring them home but I doub't they will use us as our rosters are so tightly packed.

There is a hell of a lot of flights arriving into Gatwick in the early hours of Thursday morning.

I know Cyprus is a popular holiday destination, so it is difficult to tell which may be package charters and what are "evacuee" flights. I wouldn't have thought they are all package holiday charters. One is from Akrotiri.

Ships are docking at Larnaca...Paphos is the far west (opposite) end of the island. AMT should mean America Trans Air...ATA....and AKROTIRI is the name of the UK air base on the south coast near the town of Limassol....maybe 50 or so miles west of Larnaca.

HMS Bulwark is currently in port at Beirut and expecting to take 3-4000 British Citizen all in ONE go and another 1000 on to the air carrier HMS Illustrious - which are being flown to the ship by Chinooks.

This is really going to put the pressure on to Cyprus, when they all land in Limassol, and bear in mind there is already over 1000 evacuees on the island waiting to be flown home. Only one ATA 757-300 has flown these people back home so far.

So far the Ministry of Defence and Foreign Office have 5 charters all scheduled to leave Cyprus today, so I expect there will be a huge amount of activity in the next few days.

MSNBC is carrying live the first planeload of American evacuees to touchdown at BWI at 6:30am Eastern time. It's an Omni Air International DC-10.

They're reporting one on Thursday (today), three on Friday, and one more charter scheduled for Saturday, so far.

Brand new terminals are under construction at both LCA and PFO but will not open until early 2009. At the moment the existing airports (especially LCA) are struggling to handle the extra passengers (on top of the usual July - August peak).

New LCA terminal will be able to handle 9m passengers (Phase 1) and 12m passengers (Phase 2) as opposed to 3m that existing facilities can handle.

New PFO terminal will be able to handle 3.1m.

AC ferry flights are leaving Toronto today to pick up evacuees departing from Adana, Turkey.

A340-300(fin 903) will be shuttling for the next few days between Adana & Montreal.

B767-300(fin 640) will be shuttling for the next few days between Adana & Toronto.

I believe there may be a third 763 in operation as well.

Don't know why idle MEA A320's and A332's are not called upon to ferry evacuees from LCA to European hubs. Does it have to do with landing rights? I understand that MEA will be taking part in moving evacuees out of DAM.

The Finnish government hasn't organized the flights, only the ferry trips out of Beirut to a safe harbour (in Cyprus). According to a local paper Finnair has been flexible, they have took passengers without tickets and even without valid passports.

I wonder if Cyprus ever usually sees this type of traffic typically at their airport. Are there many international long hauls into Cyprus? Or are all these aircraft newcomers? Must be neat to see them all coming in - wish it was under better circumstances.

Cyprus has been a very busy tourist destination for a long time, a lot of charter traffic from Northern and Central-Europe, especially from UK.

Not many long-hauls outside Europe, I guess.

Correct Andaman. Tourists in Cyprus come mostly from the UK and Germany but also from many other European countries like Finland, Sweden, Netherlands, Greece etc. During the last few years tourism from Russia, Israel and Lebanon were also on the rise.

There are not currently any scheduled long haul routes however wide body aircraft are used from medium haul routes like the CYA330 to LHR, MAN, AMS and CDG, the BA B767 to LHR and EK A330 to Dubai and Malta. Syrian used to operate a B747 for a while.

There were rumours earlier this year about a CY service to the US using the A330 but this was put on hold due to the financial crisis the company was in.

Hopefully, with the new terminals under construction at both LCA and PFO (completion 2009 and 2008 respectively) Cyprus can re-position itself on the busy airports map. There are even thoughts that given its strategic location, Cyprus airports may be transformed into mini-hubs connecting Europe with the Middle East and Asia. However, this has to be assessed again when the terminals are in operation.

The aircraft is chartered by the French Foreign Affairs Ministry.
More flights should be operated next week.

Two MEA flights - ME1003 and ME1005 are shortly passing through Singapore enroute to Sydney.

Although the port of origin is not shown on the arrival flight board, I assume its LCA.

Similarly, Qantas has operated B743 flights from Sydney through SIN to an unspecified destination yesterday and today . . . again, might just be LCA.
