Saudi Arabian Start Hong Kong Passenger Flights

Fri Jul 21, 2006 5:08 am

Service is just once a week currently, routing Riyadh-Manila-Hong Kong with a 744 flights from Jeddah will be added later on. SV Cargo have been in HKG since 2003, this is their first passenger operation to a Chinese city.

Starting 29/10/06, all times UTC
SV854/SV859-2-744-RUH/MNL-0845/HKG/1015-MNL/RUH
SV856/SV855-6-744-JED/MNL-0925/HKG/1200-MNL/JED

One thing I don't understand - why does it go manila first then hong kong then back to manila? isnt that a bit out of the way?

I was most surprised to find out there are 30,000 Fillipino's in Lebanon and yet no direct service was established by PR or ME for Manila-Beirut via Dubai would have been best and PR most suited with A340.

Only once a week to MNL from JED/RUH? Honestly, I can't make head or tails with SV's schedules. If I were traveling to MNL, I would much prefer EK, QR, or GF. Not only do they provide more frequencies, but the service is much better.

well first time to hear that too, that's huge for such a small country, and i think you started a good question why neither PR or ME never operated that route i would say that ME planes wasn't to go for that ultra haul routes and i think like you said they would be making the connection in DBX through diffrent airlines that fly to MNL from DBX, about PR i hope there is someone from who can answer that questin for us about their planes.

I hear you, i flew SV once long time ago, so i can't really judge their service nowadays but what i heared about QR makes me fly them even over EK

Hi there,

Haven't been here for a while.

Regarding the new HKG service, it is routed via MNL because it is an extension of the MNL flight rather than a new one. I believe they will eventually get their own 777 service once the route is established.

As for frequencies to MNL, SV operate between 4-5 flights a week from RUH and 2-3 flights a week from JED

BUT Hong Kong is closer to Saudi Arabia than Manila is!!! Why is Manila the intermediate stop not Hong Kong?

If you fly Jeddah-Manila, you wil come through Hong Kong FIR FIRST, and THEN out to Manila FIR!!!

A significant number of the 30,000 Filipinos in Lebanon work domestically and do not therefore travel very frequently between Lebanon and the Philippines. So it wouldn't make much sense to open a route to for this sort of traffic.

Is the Filipino community the largest East Asian group in Lebanon? there are 12000 each of Indians, Bengalis and Sri Lankans there, and less than 500 Pakistani's yet PIA operated to BEY during the 90's using an A310 flights were via Abu Dhabi and Amman as did Sri Lankan from Colombo.

PIA fly Islamabad-Hong Kong-Bangkok-Islamabad, and Lahore-Paris-Milan-Lahore and Lahore-Milan-Athens-Lahore now those are weirder routes.

I agree, it's not the best routing, but I guess they opted for the minimum change option.

Don't forget that Manila is the established market here and SV probably didn't want to disrupt that considering the high number of competitors on the Middle East-Manila routes.

Also since there are not current non-stops between Hong Kong and Dubai (only direct flights), SV probably thought it didn't really matter where the passengers were required to stop.

Emirates EK 380/381 and Cathay Pacific CX 731/732/738/745/746 are all current nonstops

Cathay is doing 3x weekly Hong Kong-Bahrain-Riyadh-Hong Kong.

Cathay's 3x weekly schedule takes 10h55 from Hong Kong to Riyadh via Bahrain and 8h50 back nonstop.

Saudia's 1x weekly schedule takes 12h15 from Hong Kong to Riyadh via Manila and 12h30 back also via Manila.

For Saudi Arabian to start competing they have to do a bit better...

It is clear that MNL is a more important port for SV. Thats why they want to keep MNL with non-stop rather than put MNL a stopover. Maybe we will see routings like....Riyadh-Manila-Ho Chi Minh-Manila-Riyadh....in the future.just an example. But definitely SV will face intense competition with CX, EK, and Qatar.
