Freighters From LHR

Fri Jul 21, 2006 5:22 am

Do airlines still run freighters from LHR on a regular basis ?

About a month ago I saw a JAL 747 freighter take off as I was lining up to take off. (Sorry for the pict quality, I was amazed to see it).

JAL 747 freighter taking off from LHR 02.06.06 at 8pm

is it viable to send freighters from LHR as opposed to any other london airport which must surely be cheaper and better use of a valuable LHR slot.

Today I saw what I thought look like a Saudi Arabian DC10 ? parked by the bmi hangars.. can anyone correct me ?

JAL/Korean/Singapore/Cathay/EL-AL and EVA all send freighters into LHR fairly regularly. Some come every couple of days, some once only one a week.

DHL also do alot of freight work on behalf of BA out of LHR.

The airlines must consider the freight services valuable enough to use a slot otherwise they would send them elsewhere. Cargo normally makes more $$ per KG carried than passengers do.

LHR is one of the biggest freight terminals in Europe, however most of it is flown out as belly cargo in pax a/c or trucked in and out.

It is quite spectacular to watch those empty freighters take off. They climb like space ships.

The Saudi DC-10 you saw was most likely an MD-11 although they don't vist very often.

BA World Cargo's capacity ist basically the bellies of the BA Pax fleet, so a lot of Cargo flies in and out of LHR. (although less than through FRA, AMS and CDG)

Some will be trucked to other hubs like EMA, but I am sure the JAL Cargo plane is pretty full every time

cheers

Freight activity at LHR has declined over the years. While the Heathrow area holds the concentration of London freight forwarders, slot and curfew restrictions make LHR far from ideal as a cargo base.

The BA/GSS 747 freighter fleet is based at STN, while other carriers have also made STN as their preferred London cargo airport. STN freighter tonnage far exceeds that both of LHR and LGW, howoever both LHR and LGW exceed STN overall cargo tonnage due to the carriage of belly cargo.

DHL have a flight every night but they have multiple flights at weekends when there are more slots available

Is this a passenger config ?

That and sometimes airlines need to fill a slot they have lest it be revoked and awarded to competition.

The SV MD11 is not a freighter.
