CX And 346 To Sydney?

Fri Jul 21, 2006 4:08 pm

Will CX again use the 346 to fly to Sydney again this upcoming northern winter (Austtralia's summer)?

it's not scheduled at this stage.

at the moment it looks like 3 per day with 3 class A330.

But there might be last might or ad hoc changes...

Like 6thfreedom has said its all A330. But during the Australian summer they do send do the A346 on occasion or the A343

All 3 A346s are tied up with New York and London. If anything Sydney will go 4x daily and get a HDA A333 in the not so distance future (and when they get them back from CCA). It's not scheduled for this coming winter season.

I think MEL will go triple daily before SYD goes to 4pw.

Probably Nov 07 at the latest..

I'd more likely see MEL and ADL delinked before MEL went triple daily, that would add an extra probably 400/500 seats weekly dedicated to MEL, ADL could then get a dedicated 3x weekly flight.

CX 346's don't fly to LHR often do they? I thought the 3rd aircraft flew to YVR a few times weekly?

Very rarely. The A346 is dedicated to HKG-JFK route soon it will be served by B773ER once CX receive them

Not true. At the moment either 253/254 or 256/257 (or both) is usually an A346 but starting winter schedule both will become A346s. 830/831 has been/will be A346.

This is the winter season schedule ex-VHHH for all the A346s. Should be easy enough to figure out what is what. All datetimes UTC.

CX254/CX253-34567-346-LHR-1005/HKG/0635-LHR-1OVN
CX254/CX830-12-346-LHR-1005/HKG/0215-JFK-1OVN
CX256/CX830-34567-346-LHR-0750/HKG/0215-JFK-1OVN
CX256/CX257-12-346-LHR-0750/HKG/0120-LHR-1OVN
CX507/CX257-2-346-KIX-1345/HKG/0120-LHR-2OVN
CX831/CX253-7-346-JFK-1155/HKG/0635-LHR-2OVN
CX831/CX257-34567-346-JFK-1155/HKG/0120-LHR-2OVN
CX831/CX253-2-346-JFK-1155/HKG/0635-LHR-1OVN
CX831/CX506-1-346-JFK-1155/HKG/0220-KIX-1OVN

The fourth Sydney service as I have mentioned will be on a Dragonair (HDA) A333, 3 of which have been leased to Air China (CCA). The rights have been granted to Dragon therefore this is kind of a separate issue from other Cathay Australian services.

Where do you get your info from?

There are no 346's loaded on those routes that you mentioned other than JFK, unless they come under EQV, but none of the LHR flights are EQV, there are 2 744's and 2 343's daily.

the 3 leased A346 of CX were rented primarily for the JFK non-stops. for crew familiarisation/training/maintaining min hours etc, and of course utilisation, occasionally operated to SYD & SIN. But A346 is really dedicated to JFK.

when CX's lease of the A346 expires won't they replace it with the B773ER once they get it or do they have long term plans of the A346??

Just remember that is the MEL pax that support ADL services, not the other way around.
The only reason CX increased services via ADL from 2 to 4pw was not because MEL was not doing well, but to test how many pax they could attract from ADL to see if it could sustain 3 or 4pw terminators.

Now that CX owns KA, why would they introduce a 4th service under a different brand in a HDA config? That's obsurd.

Also remember that SYD has a curfew 23.00 - 06.00, which means there are only 17 hours of ops per day.
CX effectively has services every 3 hours, and that covers all the departure banks to/from AND OLD: Hong Kong - Kai Tak International (HKG / VHHH) (closed), China - Hong Kong">HKG. I think you will find CX increasing capacity on 21pw rather than adding frequency.

MEL however could support a 3rd frequency.
