AccessAir Update

Fri Jun 23, 2000 8:56 am

For that small yet hearty group of AcessAir followers, here is the latest news update from today's Des Moines Register:

Airline fills 2 spots at top

AccessAir has abandoned plans to hire a management company and has selected two current employees to be its top managers.

* Donald Armington, a former jet-fighter pilot and former high-ranking officer in the Iowa Air National Guard, has been named chief administrative officer.

* Steven Wilson, a passenger-jet pilot with 22 years in the airline industry, has been named chief operations officer.

Spokeswoman Julie Evans said AccessAir decided to establish its own management team because outside companies wanted the Des Moines-based airline's federal operating permit as part of any deal to manage the company.

Putting the certificate in another name would mean the outside firm, if it chose to in the future, could have closed down operations in Iowa and moved to another state to start a new airline with no Iowa service, Evans and Wilson said.

Des Moines businessman John Ruan III, who is leading efforts to save AccessAir, didn't want to risk that possibility, they said. Ruan's main reason for trying to revive the airline, which is in bankruptcy court, is to provide lower-priced air service to Des Moines and Iowa, Evans said.

The appointment of Armington and Wilson puts the airline another step closer to resuming regular passenger service, Evans said. A date hasn't been announced.

Armington and Wilson were chosen because of their abilities, experience and leadership, Ruan said in a prepared statement.

Armington, a Des Moines native, joined AccessAir a year ago as a co-pilot and director of training.

He is a former assistant adjutant general for the Iowa Air National Guard and former commander of the 132nd Fighter Wing in Des Moines.

Wilson, a native of Tulsa, Okla., joined AccessAir last July as director of operations. He has been a pilot and manager for several airlines.
