Condi Rice's Plane At LGA Today?

Sat Jul 22, 2006 4:02 am

I was just wondering if Condoleezza Rice's plane landed at LGA yesterday/departed this morning after her UN meetings...Or did they use EWR/JFK? Anybody catch what plane she flew up on?

I work at LGA for the very FBO that handles her A/C. And yes she did come into LGA yesterday but after I left so I did not get to see. It was probably a military BBJ painted just like AF1. When I say we "handle" them, actually all we do is marshall them into a parking spot and provide fuel if necessary... secret service pretty much handles the rest. BTW...she and other gov't officials have some DIESEL security!

Where do they park at LGA?

I think the Secretary of State is protected by the Diplomatic Security Service...Although I'm sure Secret Service is involved as well.

Haha, what in particular makes you say that? I feel like there is a story there!

From what I gather, I believe it is a B757

All GA aircraft that come into LGA are parked in the area across from the AA MX hangars that run parallel to rwy 4-22.

You're probably more correct than me.

No, story, really, but the motorcade that comes through is quite large for one person.

You may be right about that...they have come in before. Cheney came in on a '75 not too long ago.

They have all sorts of planes painted in what we commonly call "AF1" colors. Two B742s (for the Prez only), a few 757s, a few BBJs and a few Gulfstreams. They also used to have DC-9s, but I thought they were replaced by the BBJs.

The 757's are possible, but are mostly reserved for the vice president hints Air Force Two.

Actually there are 3 B747's for the President...one is usually out in NM...lot different equipment onboard that one...they rarely use that one...except in serious situations.

I once took a crewmember who has flown on AF1 and he refused to divulge the exact number of 747's used for the Prez.

Just to set a few things straight here for the record:

The 316th wing and the 89th wing out of Andrews AFB handles all movement associated to "Air Force One". There are also military designations for the aircraft type

Quoting EHHO (Reply 6):
They have all sorts of planes painted in what we commonly call "AF1" colors. Two B742s (for the Prez only), a few 757s, a few BBJs and a few Gulfstreams.

Military names for the planes:
-The 747 is actually a VC-25A (the military aircraft type for the specially configured plane). While this is the Presidents plane no doubt, Cheny has taken it before, although it is quite rare.

-The 757 is actually a C-32, there are a handful of them in the fleet at Andrew's. Usually reserved for Cheney and Secretary Rice and Rumsfeld, and in some cases the President when the airport he is going to can not accomodate the VC-25A (such as New Haven).

-The 737/BBJ in the US Air Force Colors is actually a C-40B all sorts of officials seem to use this. The Navy also has a similar aircraft in their fleet.

-The Gulfstream V is a C-37 actually. The Gulfstream IV's are actually either a C-20H or a C-20B (one has longer range). Both are in the "Air Force One" blue colors. I have seen Cheney and Bush use these planes where the airports they are going to are really small and can not handle the larger planes. Bush used once to fly into a small texas airport once (I forget which). Cheney used one in Owensboro, Kentucky a couple days ago.

-Technically Air Force One is the call sign on whichever aircraft the president is on. Traditionally this is the 747 (VC-25A) you usually see him on. Occassionally he will take the 757 (C-32) that Secretary Rice frequently uses, and sometimes the G-IV/V(C-20/C-37). I have never heard of, or seen, the President use the BBJ (C-40B) for a trip. But the callsign is universal.

Quoting N839MH (Reply 8):

There are actually only the 2, with tailnumbers 28000 and 29000, what I think you are referring to for the 3rd one is the "doomsday plane" which is another modified 747 that is essentially a flying command center for something.
http://www.cloud9photography.us/e/E1...enterDoomsdayPlane_JamesKippen.jpg

The exact term for that plane is a Boeing E-4 NAOC National Airborne Operations which actually Secretary Rumsfeld prefers traveling on these days. He used to fly on the C-32 for his travels, but now prefers to take the E-4 where he can handle situations like he was at the Pentagon (which is what that aircraft is equipped for). The C-32 doesn't have the communications.

checkmark  coorectamundo!  bigthumbsup  DSS, not Secret Service protect the Sec. of State. Believe it or not, DC has some ridiculously large number of police departments/law enforcement divisions, so just about every important person in DC that has some security detail has it from some agency. Capitol Hill Police I know protect the important lawmakers for instance.

Hope this clears it all up. I come from a military family so i know, you can get a lot of info on google about the military versions of the planes.  Smile

Read up on the term "Air Force One" please.

Quoting Tsaord (Reply 3):

She doesn't. The Secretary of State uses the aircraft that is available and suited to the mission, whether a Gulfstream, BBJ or 757. She has been shown on TV on the C32 (757) before and usually uses that aircraft for longer flights

Quoting Burnsie28 (Reply 7):

Rice actually uses the 757s a lot

The ones with the "different equipment" are E4-B Nightwatch aircraft and there are 3 of them. There are 2 VC-25A aircraft and those have actually been upgraded over time to be able to do most anything the E4-B can do. The E4-Bs are in Nebraska, not New Mexico

Quoting TinPusher007 (Reply 9):

He was an idiot given that the number is a matter of public record

Actually, it is the call sign for whichever Air Force aircraft the President is on. If the President is on a Navy plane, it is "Navy One", "Marine One" is used for Marine aircraft, etc. If the President is on a commercial flight, it is supposed to go by Executive One.

The E-4 is a modified 747-200B which is to act as a mobile command center in the case of a national emergency (generally we're talkin nuclear war). There are actually four of these aircraft and one aircraft must be kept within a certain distance of POTUS at all times. They are based at Offutt AFB, Nebraska.

When would he ever go commercially? or more, what are you refering to there? I know when he leaves office and flies home someplace they call it something besides Air Force One (even though he is on the VC-25A). Is that what you are talking bout?

I forgot to mention its "Navy One" or "Marine One" and that the "Air Force One" is only for air force aircraft...perhaps its because its 5 AM here, lol  Smile

Nixon flew commercially once to set an example during the oil crisis...I believe it was on a United DC-10 and his entourage took over the front cabin.

Indeed, I've always wondered which agencies protect certain individuals, like a random midlevel Cabinet secretary or CIA Director, etc. Tons of people in DC need security details!

While we're on the topic, who protects the SecDef? I imagine the Pentagon has a special security unit or something....

Believe it is Pentagon Police, non-uniformed division. I once saw the vice-chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at a dinner I was working and he had an agent with him. Secretary of Transportation also had an agent, but I don't know who.

They usually do, Cheney, Rice, and Bush have all been seen on TV/photos meeting with US troops or people in the terminal.
