Plane Rented For Marriage Proposal Crashes

Sat Jul 22, 2006 11:49 pm

Original article posted here. Fair use excerpt follows:

Quote:

ROME, Ga. -- A plane that was chartered to help a man propose to his girlfriend crashed, injuring the couple and the pilot, authorities said.
(...)
The couple, Adam Sutton and Erica Brussee, and the pilot were taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life threatening, authorities said.
(...)
As Brussee was loaded into the ambulance, she said "Tell Adam I said yes," said Joshua Willis, Sutton's cousin. The ring was lost in the wreckage, he said.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.

Well, at least she said yes...

That poor guy! He went through all the trouble of coming up with a fairly unique and romantic proposal, only to end up in a hospital! If this is how the proposal went, I don't want to know how the wedding is going to go! Let's hope he keeps that on the ground.

I know someone here in Mexico who arranged to propose his Guatemalan girlfriend on the upper deck of KL's B747 service MEX-GUA, more or less at the time the a/c crossed into Guatemalan airspace (back when that flight still existed). The "proposal ceremony" included the couple were "asked" to the upper deck 'to see the captain', who, together with the chief purser and other f/a's acted as witnesses.

Kudos to KL for acquiescing to such arrangement. BTW, she said yes.

Quite romantic if you ask me.

I took one of my old room-mates and his now wife flying for his proposal to her. He popped the question on downwind for 29 and by base she said yes  Smile It was a unique and pleasant experience for everyone, no doubt helped by the fact that I managed to keep the 172 properly oriented the whole time, I even had a greaser on touchdown. I feel bad for this guy, but I guess she must really love him if this didn't scare her off. I wonder where they will drive for their honeymoon?

a sheet with "Erica, will you marry me?" painted on it watched from the ground as the Cessna 127, circling low over the airport, stalled and then crashed into the ground Friday evening.

No such thing as a Cessna 127 so I'm guessing its a Cessna 172.

Are you kidding? It's going to be GREAT! It surely can't get much worse than crashing an airplane while proposing. I'd say they've gotten all their bad luck out at the beginning!

Back in 2005 my girlfriend was in GDL for business so I decided to visit her for the weekend, took everything with me, ring, and champagne. On the return trip,an AM MD-87, I change the tickets to C instead of Y . I had bought a bouquet of 18 red roses, which I told the girlfriend were for my mother. Due to last minute cell call to girlfriend I got on the plane first and told the purser my plans. She seemed very happy and even cheery about it. So halfway through the flight, (one hour) I got up, ask for the PA, and made my announcement. Something like, XXXX please accept my engagement ring. I returned to my seat and at the point when she said yes I put the ring on her and that's when the purser brought the flowers and the champagne. Great moment for me and great moment for her as she was crying (of happiness, hopefully) All passengers, both in C and Y clapped and the captain came out to wish us the best and the purser announded the answer on the PA. There was no corny thing as kneeling etc..

Taking a chick flying with you = good. Stalls, steep turns, and spins make you seem like you're a crazy stunt pilot/fighter ace. Good times, indeed.

Does the term "Bad Omen" ring a bell to anyone? If the crash wasn't, loosing the ring surely was!

But then again, what a story to tell to the grandkids.

In an odd coda to this entire event, there was this article I came across.

Fair-use excerpt:

Quote:

A local couple whose plane crashed during a marriage proposal was featured on NBC’s “Today” show Monday.

Adam Sutton, 19, Erika Brussee, 18, and Brussee’s mother Karen Holland spoke with “Today” co-host Campbell Brown and recounted parts of the harrowing experience.
(...)
Since it was first reported by the Rome News-Tribune on Friday, the story has been picked up by news publications and programs around the world — from coast to coast in the United States to Australia, Bangkok, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, to name a few internationally.

Holland said the families of the couple are being bombarded by national media requests and are inclined to avoid other television interviews “unless Oprah calls.”
(...)
The happy and relieved couple picked out a replacement engagement ring from Kay Jewelers. The original ring was lost during the crash and the store offered to replace it. Holland said the ring is a carat of diamonds featuring a marquis and cluster diamonds.

Well, at least the ring was replaced, that's always nice, lol.

Nothing corny about being a gentleman and wanting to propose to your future bride. My wife expected me to kneel. And, of course, thank goodness you didn't include the corny announcement, corny roses, corny champagne, corny ring.
Kneeling is a part of a marriage proposal, in traditional fashion.

There's a higher than 60% chance that they won't be together to tell the story to their grandkids, unfortunately.

South of the border you don't kneel. Roses and champagne are expected.

Can somebody dig up that link to the Canadian (?) ATC guy that proposed to his gf who was on an inbound flight, and the captain put him on the PA? It was really moving to listen to. The guy was nervous as hell, and the captain was really cool.

Right, except that by labeling kneeling as "corny" you make it sound like the practice is silly or ridiculous and you offend millions of men who did kneel to propose. Besides, I know plenty of people "south of the border" who knelt when they proposed. Remember, being from Peru I am also "south of the border" from the US.
