Wings They Used To Give Kids, Do They Still?

Sun Jul 23, 2006 12:17 pm

When I was between the ages 4-10 (1980-1986) I remember airlines giving me these little plastic wings. I recall you had to ask for them. Does any airline still give these out to kids or is that one of the many things that has gone away due to cost cutting. I had, and still have: Ozark, TWA, Continental, Delta, Republic, American, Eastern, Northwest, United, Frontier (the old one), Aspen, and Piedmont. I remember trading kids in the neighborhood for a USAir and PanAm. Those little wings were always so cool. I have not asked for any since I was ten and I have not seen any kids ask either. TWA and Frontier were my favorites. Eastern and United were my least favorites because they were stick-on and they always fell off when you stuck them to your shirt.

Was this something that only US airlines did or did others do it too?

NW still does not pin-backed ones. The double-sided tape variety.

AirTran still has them. Pretty high quality ones too, they actually have a real pin on the back, not like those cheap ones with the glue strip on the back.

What about those little log books? I think mine was from Pan Am.

IIRC, it listed date, flight number, departure and arrival airports, distance/duration, and captain's name. I was really proud of mine, having filled a couple of pages by the time I was 10 or so...

They used to, I think I had two pairs...they were easily my favorite.

In addition to those, I had sets from AA, AS, and UA and I'm reasonably sure WN as well. I didn't do much flying in my youth, so I got all those from check-in/boarding desks at SEA back in the good old days when you could go past security without a ticket.

I got a metal KLM Junior Pilot wing from the captain during a visit to the cockpit of a DC-10 in 1984. I still have it and it still is in very good condition too. I also got a 747-200 plastic model (which hasn't survived).

Sun Country does. You have to ask. Sometimes the F/A will give them out as everyone gets off the plane. The kids think its great.

I remember that BOAC /BA had their Junior Jet Club log books, which the Captains would fill in with all the details and sign, and as a young crew member it was sometimes a bit embarrising to look at a teenagers log book and find that he/she would sometimes have nearly as many hours as you did.

In later years many mature men would come to visit the flight deck still clutching their Junior Jet log books with pride and rather shyly ask if they could be filled in. Was it a much better/innocent aviation age then, or am I sadly just getting old

Lredlefsen,

They still have them on BA, you pay a pound. I have seen lots of kids buy them.

VC10,

No you are not getting old! It still happens!

WN still does. Cheap plastic, two sided tape ones that stick to you for about one leg.

I still have my JJC/Flightriders/Skyflyers (as the name morphed through the years) logbook - even though I stopped filling it in about 10 years ago! Nowadays, an Excel workbook does the same job.

It was definitely a more innocent age then though. Let's appreciate it for what we once had and enjoyed rather than mourn its passing!

I had one of those, filled in by the Captain between BOM & SIN in 1968, and traversed the Subcontinent in the jumpseat, likely stayed there all the way to SIN except my mother insisted I come back to my seat and eat lunch!!

I remember Delta giving me plastic planes as a kid and wings. I dont remember if the plastic plane was the same type as I was on at the time though.

I liked the planes much better than the wings.

I always have a huge stack with me in my bag to give out to little kids. We also have tons in the plane that get stocked regularly. All you usually need to do is ask an inflight crewmember and i'm sure they will be more than willing to get you a pair.

Karma....sooo cool, my sons are about ready for their first flights...I was thinking about this today...My Uncle used to be a UA skipper...every time he had a layover in SEA, he would bring me one when I was a young pup.

I don't know about US East, but on the HP side the wings have been discontinued. We ran out in PHX months ago and word is that we're not going to be getting any more.
