First 787 Into LHR?

Sun Jul 23, 2006 7:34 pm

It seems that LHR will be seeing loads of A380s from early on in the programme's life (SQ, QF, EK, VS, etc.) but it may be much longer before 787s are seen there regularly.

Who'll be the first to fly them into LHR?

Neither of the Japanese airlines seem likely. Nor do any of the Chinese airlines. NW and CO don't (can't) fly to LHR and Blue Panorama and First Choice won't be there either. NZ and QF seem unlikely to use them into London and so on and so on.

My guess would be Icelandair and Air Canada as the only likely airlines in the near term. Maybe Kenya Airways and Air India would come later.

Either way, it seems that LHR will NOT be the place to see 787s in the early years at least.

Also, same sort of topic. What about A350's

BA will order 787 for sure. But until then what about JAL or ANA?

Air Canada and Kenya Airways seem the obvious ones to me. AC will probably use them on routes like Halifax and Ottawa - LHR (routes like LHR-YYZ might need the capacity of a B777). As Nairobi-LHR is arguably KQ's main route and the B787 will be their main long haul aircraft I would expect them to send them to LHR

I guess Air India will use a larger aircraft on most LHR services but maybe a B787 will beb used from smaller cities like Calcutta. As for Icelandair I guess they will only use their B787 at peak times

Another possibility is Air Seychelles

They will go to 777-300ERs. They JAL recently reduced 747s to LHR (something with them entering OneWorld). They now operate 777s. I think it will stay that way.

Like others, I would think that Kenyan and AC will be the ones into LHR. Does ET serve LHR? If they do, they are also a candidate.
My name is Centrair but HND is closer. Let's Japanese Aviation!

AC will use the 787s for YYZ to LHR along with B777. don't forget AC wants frequencies. I can see them using YYC and YVR to LHR.

Unless traffic picks up or the 78 is used for prestige, you will not see ET operating it into LHR. ET has operated 75s almost exclusively for years into LHR and LGW.

The 787 would be a perfect replacement for the 767s, so I'd say BA will eventually order it.

Very likely given that British Airways has long been a Boeing user. And if the 787-10 comes into being, it will likely be used to replace BA's older 777s.

I can see BA placing a very large 787 order a few years down the road, consolidating - by replacing both their 777 and 767 fleets into an order for 787-8 and 787-10.

checkmark .....BA just recently re-upped their options on the 777 (from 1998) with the ability for them to change to the 787's...

I see 787's, B747-8I, A32x as their fleet...possibly a dozen or so A380's down the road for their trunk routes....but I think they would go with the 747-8I first...

Maybe when CAL merges with UAL, LHR will see a 787.

AA will certainly order the 787 (within the next 1 year IMO), so I'm betting some 787 in AA colors will be flying around LHR. I hope to be on one of them.

I dont think you would see the 787 at LHR right away. In all likelyhood the 787 would first replace the aging 767-223 fleet and be deployed on LAX/SFO-JFK. AA is happy with 100% 777 ops at LHR, plus having a common fleet type at a particular city helps keep costs down.

I have noticed the 763 doing LHR and LGW several times the last 2 weeks or so.

LY will most probably order them to replace their ageing 767s. They would be trying to pressure Boeing for quick delivery and will be used on LHR.

You're right....AI will probably use the 777's on the LHR route, but could have a few 787's flying direct from smaller cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore, maybe even Ahmedabad....

Kolkata, as you rightly pointed out, could be a candidate for direct 787 flights to LHR , but I'd be careful about calling it a 'smaller city'....definitely a lower traffic city, but it happens to be one of the biggest cities in India....you'll have a bunch of Bengali babu's at your throat for saying this...it's all too easy to hurt their ego's... smile

Much depends on the delivery slots but I guess some of the European carriers might use them temporarily on some LHR flights post delivery in the same way that the likes of IB A340s, AF 777s and others have been used on LHR flights in the past.

With that in mind we might see the odd LO or FI 787 flight operated after taking delivery.

But as far as regular scheduled ops are concerned then most likely AC and KQ as already stated must be contenders.
