Business Class In CRJ-700s And -900s Possible?

Fri Jun 23, 2000 2:41 pm

Given the lack of business class seats in the CRJ-200, which has only 50 seats in an all-economy config, I'm wondering if the CRJ-700 and -900 could be fitted with business class seats?

Note that the CRJ's economy-class seating is 4-abreast, or 2-2 across the cabin, so business class, if possible, might be 1-2 or 1-1 abreast. The CRJ-700 is a 70-seat version, while the CRJ-900 would be able to seat 90. Both of these figures are in all-economy class.

Not surprisingly, airlines and passengers seem to complain that the CRJ doesn't have business class seating. I hear this often about Air Canada's CRJs, for example.

Theoretically any commercial aircraft can have a business class, even a B1900D. Putting in a business class almost goes against the purpose of a regional jet. Putting in a business class usually means an extra FA which costs $$$. Since most RJs are used on thin routes to save money, I don't see RJs getting business class anytime soon. Also, I don't recall ERJs on American Eagle having a business class either.

I would expect some airline to fit a business class - the aircraft has an endurance of up to three hours. Don't Lauda operate a two class CRJ? They use the aircraft on scheduled routes which are fairly long, such as Salzburg - London.

Flying in a CRJ is like eating a saltine without salt. What a completely boring airplane/ride. Also, the seats are ridiculous!!!! I couold easily fly direct to my client on a CRJ, but I choose to connect throught ATL on 757/md-80 just to avoid that overstuffed chicken coop!!! So what it takes me an extra 2 hrs...at least I don't have to share the 2 breaths of air that fit in such a tiny cabin with so many people!!!! GGRRROSSSSSSS!

Personally 747orDie, I think the CRJ is a great little airplane, I would take that over a Dash-8 anyday. Midway Airlines offers all its seats including the CRJ's all in leather seats which are very comfortable. The only thing that I don't like about them (atleast on ASA and Midway) is the placement of the seats to the windows. They are way too far back! You have to lean forward everytime to get a good view, Why do they do that?

I think some airlines will install a business class section on the 700's and 900's especially on longer routes.

I think Air Canada could put business class seats in its CRJs. Some of the transborder routes are indeed long and thin, some of them being over 2 hours, like YYZ-Kansas City, for example. It would actually make sense. AC doesn't fly RJs to save money - it uses them to fly to markets that can't even support DC-9s! Also, there are fees and taxes for flying into US airspace. Given that business class passengers actually generate far more revenue than economy class passengers, and that's there likely a demand for business class seats in CRJs, I don't see why not!
