NZ Business Class

Mon Jul 24, 2006 7:40 am

Hi Guys
As you know if you have read my past posts, I wasn't able to take my vacation to New Zealand this past May because my fear of flying reared its ugly head again. Any way, I've talked to some folks, got some meds, and I am going to try it again. I also have a friend that is going with me. Sort of another reason to get on the plane.

That said, I have a bunch of miles saved from the days that I enjoyed flying. We are going to go Business class on Air New Zealand. With NZ 1/2 going to 777s, is there a difference between the 747 and the 777. I'm talking about the service here. Or would it be a wash? The seat plans look like that there is more room down stairs on the 747 than on the 777, but that may just be on the picture.

Thanks
Dave

Dave,
Check out www.seatguru.com, that might give you a better idea of the seating layout. In any case with the business class seating on NZ you're in your own 'pod' so you don't have any issues with seats reclining in front of you.
Hope your enjoy your trip down under!
Cheers
Rupert

Assuming you are planning to fly from LAX then you will have the option of the 747 on NZ5/6.
Now, I am not sure how far in advance you must firm up your space. Last year, Friends of ours could not get business class with Aeroplan points as far as 9 or 10-months in advance and were forced to fly LAX-SYD-AKL and return on UA.

NZ biz class is just like VS upper class the flat lie bed.

I've had the opportunity to fly both the 777 and 747 in Business Premier. Here are the trip reports that fully describe the flights:
Air New Zealand - Business Premier SEA-SFO-AKL-CHC (by RoseFlyer Jan 2 2006 in Trip Reports) ZQN-AKL-SFO-SEA On Air New Zealand BusinessPremier (by RoseFlyer Jan 7 2006 in Trip Reports)

As for which is better, I'm not sure. They both were amazing. I would personally say that the mid cabin on the 747 is open, yet a bit crowded. The 777 has wonderful lighting and had a very open feeling. I loved the LEDs with their multicolor lighting. I recommend that plane, but overall, you can't go wrong with Business Premier. It is just amazing although the food isn't. The service might be better on the 747 since it is staffed a bit better, but overall Air New Zealand is understaffing its planes so the service suffers even though the flight attendants are some of the best in the world.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!
