JFK 31L Taxi Patterns

Mon Jul 24, 2006 9:10 am

I'm looking at the FAA diagram of JFK here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:JFK_airport_map.png

and am trying to figure out where aircraft lineup before taking off on 31L. Which taxiway is most commonly used? Every time I've flown out of JFK recently it's been on 22R or 13R so I haven't had the opportunity to figure it out!

If I am not mistaken the hold on Yankee and Alpha. At least thats what they were doing today.

They typically feed 31L from taxiway Z. When the line gets long, they often wrap it from Z to Y to F to 22R, making a kind of hook shape. When the line on 22R gets all the way back to H or J, they'll often open another line on 22L. The line on F gets split, some taking the right turn at Y and others continuing ahead to line up on 22L. The tower knows the sequence and knits the takeoff line back together at the intersection of J and Z. It's like one big lineup at Disney - the line doesn't feel as long when you keep moving and you can't see how much further there is to go.  Smile

Actually, it depends what terminal you're coming from, in some instances.

Most of the times I've taken off from 31L at JFK, we came down taxiway Zulu. Now this was for a full length departure of course.

I can also tell you that, on occasion, from what I hear on Kennedy Tower (live ATC), that for "non-full length" departures, if you will, aircraft take off from 31L at Kilo Kilo. I would assume that for those departures, aircraft line up somewhere along Alpha or Bravo.

It seems to me, that there are less departure delays when departures are on 31L and landings on 31R. When 13L is landing and 13R is departing, things seem to be stacked up more. IS there a config to land on one runway while departing on 2?

I flew out of there yesterday and JeffG seemed to hit it on the nose.

I was on B6 and we were came down Bravo taxied across 22R on Foxtrot, then turned onto Yankee and headed down Zulu where we alternated with a/c coming from terminals 1-4 on alpha. Some A/C from 3 and 4 were coming down 22R and meeting up with us on Zulu such as the sun country 738 which was ahead of us and a few delta CRJs. This was my first time to JFK as I usually drive to NYC but this was a nice chance to see a mix of a/c from all over the world. Lots of fun.

Sometimes they'll depart from both 13L and 13R while landing on 13L and 22L. But in order to depart on 13L, there has to be a gap in landing traffic, for both runways, plus a gap in departing traffic on 13R so it doesn't happen often when it's busy. Mostly they'll just stack up departures for 13R and only launch from that runway.

Landings on 13L, departures on 13R/L but this of course isn't two dedicated departure runways.

Perhaps it only seems that way because there are more taxiways on the 31L side?

It's definitly more stacked up when 22R is being used for takeoff, 22L for landing...

Hmm, I don't think they depart from 13L while 22L is being used for landings...

Sure they do, of course no aircraft can be on final to 22L at the time but I've seen it done many times.

Planes from Ts 6 and 7 generally take A to cross 22R at F, then go to Z.
Planes from Ts 1, 2 and 3 generally take B to J.
Planes from Ts 8 and 9 can go either way.
Planes from T4 can go one of the two ways, depending on where they leave the ramp.

Oh, sure they do. We´ve seen it. They have to be careful about timing, but they can do it. The reason they generally don´t is that all the landings go to 13L, and finding a departure slot can be very difficult. It´s generally faster for planes to just go to 13R.
