Aviation In Laos And Cambodia Today?

Mon Jul 24, 2006 11:30 am

I am hoping some of our airliners members from asia could tell us what is going on as far as commercial aviation in Laos and Cambodia. Are tourists welcome? What visas are required? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I just visited Cambodia in May and I can tell you that tourists are definitely welcomed. Airlines from Vietnam, China and more importantly, Thailand and Malaysia serve the major airports in Cambodia.

The people want you to visit! They have a very interesting story to tell.

Cambodia is no problem at all to visit.

Flights to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) leave from Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore and are operated by Bangkok Airways/Siem Reap Air, Thai Airways, Air Asia and Jetstar Asia.

Upon arrival you can get a 1-month tourist visa for USD20.

I don't know much about Laos, but Lao Aviation has an ATR service between Vientiane and Bangkok and Bangkok Airways flies from Bangkok to Luang Prabang.

Great places to visit. I have only been to Siem Reap Airport (REP) on MI (Silkair) from SIN. I hear Laos is great too and Vientianne is accessible on TG from BKK I know.

REP was under renovation when i visited in 2002, and from what I understand it has been completed. Not a huge hub airport, but the list of airlines and destinations serving it has increased in recent years.

I know Siem Reap Airways operates an A320 now, and an airline in Laos operates an A320 as well.

But, in whichever way you decide to go, you will have to connect from someplace in Southeast Asia most likely, and BKK is the best airport in terms of options to that part of the world.

A few times a year, NGO gets a JTB chartered Kampuchea Airlines 757. It is very popular.

I know that it is extremely popular with the Japanese tourists. So popular that a Japanese woman set up an "omiyage" (gift) center that makes "Ankor wat" shaped cookies for Japanese tourists to take back to Japan as gifts. She is rolling in "dough".  Smile (sorry)

Laos is a different story. Lao Aviation, Thai, Vietnam, China Southern and Cambodian International serve Vientiane Wattay Airport.

Quoting http://www.asia-discovery.com/Laos_tips.htm:
A valid transit, tourist visit, business, diplomatic, or service visa is required. All foreigners may enter and depart Laos via Wattay Airport, or Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, the Mekong border crossing with Nongkai, Thailand.

A visa can now be obtained upon arrival at the airport and other official entry points. However, certain regulations are applied.
Yes...I am not a KIX fan. Let's Japanese Aviation!

Both places are very open to tourism. My friends leave today for both Cambodia and Laos. They live in Japan and teach English and both of these places are popular as travel destinations as they are very affordable developing countries. Most people begin travel to these countries via Bangkok as a starting point. They invited me to meet them in Bangkok and travel with them this summer and I'm kicking myself for not doing it.

And Malaysia Airlines (MH) as well.

When going through immigration in Cambodia, chances are big that the officer will try to get more money from you. The tourist visa is USD20. If he insists on getting more, tell him you want to speak to his supervisor. That will shut him up.

Thailand and Cambodia are studying the possibility to launch a combined visa, so that tourists can visit both countries without further hassles.
The ASEAN countries are actually looking at visa-free travel within the region but that will probably only be for ASEAN nationals.

www.cambodia-airports.com provides info on both PNH & REP, including flight dep/arr boards. So has details on all airlines operating in Cambodia.

In Laos there's Lao Airlines (ATR72's, MA60's & Y7's. the ex Ansett A320 long returned to the lessor), Bangkok Air, Thai Airways, Vietnam Airlines and China Eastern.

Tourism appears to be booming in both countries, just back myself from Laos in June, marvellous place.
