JetBlue - RDU To MCO?

Tue Jul 25, 2006 1:27 am

This morning WKMG-TV6 in Orlando, FL reported on their morning newscast that JetBlue will be announcing service from MCO to RDU today.

I haven't seen any press release or anything, but it was on the news at 6:54am.... Who knows if it was true or not???

I have no clue as to the validity of the claim...
I highly doubt it as they announced BOS on Thursday, and would have probably done it then...

However, it would make sense, to route RDU, CLT, BNA and others through MCO to get to the carribean. I don't know how far out that is currently in B6's plans, but the possibilites are there with a few carribean additions to MCO.

CTL and RDU are the only upper East Coast (Non-florida) destnations without connecting or direct service to Florida on jetBlue. Seems like a good idea, although I would have thought FLL (only on carrier 3x daily on RJ). But RDUAA did mention that an MCO route could be in the future. We will have to see. I don't understand where the announcment for CLT service is.. no BOS, no MCO rumors.. very odd..

I honestly would be surprised to see this. BOS service was announced on Thursday, so I don't know why they wouldn't have announced it then too.

Doesn't WN fly RDU-MCO? We all know that B6 and WN don't like to compete head-to-head.

I wouldn't see it as a direct competition if Jetblue's motivation was for the international travel to the carribean.
Sure the traffic to the parks would be great, but I think Jetblue could make it work as a southern access to the carribean. Not many people out of RDU are going to look favorably on flying into JFK to get to the carribean.

I'm hoping for the following from B6:

MCO-LGB
MCO-BDL
MCO-SAN
MCO-NAS
MLB-JFK
MLB-IAD

FLL or MIA (if we go into the market) crossfingers  will see Carib expansion before MCO does.

That's a very good point. If the flight is timed well to connect with the BQN and SJU flights (and priced correctly), then this could possibly work out rather nicely. However, I'm not sure how large the market is from RDU to PR.

I know that they have a lot of expansion plans for FLL...

They are actually planning a FLL-BUR red-eye flight for next year... Let's hope it happens!

I'm a little suprised at JetBlue attempting service, but the RDU-MCO route is a good one and still has a void in service (despite WN's service) since Midway's demise. It actually sounds like a perfect match IMO as long as it fits B6's agenda.

This is all granted that the rumor proves true.

Midway never got back to it, plus it gives Charter companys a opportunity in the RDU market

MCO has big expansions plans too from what I hear. Also I hear MCO-RDU will be more than 2x daily.

There are big expansion plans at MCO indeed, including a possible crew base, however the focus of Florida expansion will soon shift back to South Florida. SJU/BQN were supposed to launch from FLL, but lack of gate space and jetBlue's desire to expand in the region lead to the flights launching from MCO. Not a dumb move, of course, since Orlando-Puerto Rico is a big market and the flights do well.

I think the focus will soon shift to both. Right now FLL is at maxinums. So MCO is the logial choice. I do believe if FLL builds another runway, FLL will see big expansion by B6.

Gate space is stopping them, not runway capacity.

I've heard rumors of CO/NW moving to Delta's terminal (B), or Southwest moving to open gates in the C terminal.

If that happened, it would open up several new gates for JetBlue. They already have to operate out of two concourses - which costs a lot for an airline to do.

I don't think so...at least not in this case. There's only one ticket counter and the gate agents can easily shift between the two concourses as they are within steps of each other. I'm sure it's not the most convenient set-up, but I don't think it costs them "a lot".

No Charters run that often. I think at least a Fri/Sun or Sat service could work.. to test the waters.. I do see more charters to NAS though..

Hmm.. so 6 flights to MCO (plus AE Sat/Sun service), but only 3 RJ to FLL.. interesting. Odd, but interesting..

CO has a very nice President's Club at T1, so I doubt they would move out, though it would make sense.

Another thing...

Believe it or not, RDU has taken a big hit in the number of seats available from last year at this same time. I think it's about a 15-20% drop in seats. And it has showed because with an 8% increase in passengers last year, passenger count so far this year have dropped about 5% due to lack of available flights/seats. Southwest had it right when it said RDU was below capacity and was named one of the airports that needed extra flights. So there is room for growth at RDU. The popn of the area is growing in one direction, and hopefully we will see a shift and see some larger aircraft scheduled (a la Delta) along with new flights (a la jetBlue) and hopefully at least one more carrier added this year (a la Frontier please?!?!?!?!?)...

I don't think that jetBlue wants to try and compete with USAirways 9 daliy nonstops on the CLT-BOS route...all on mainline aircraft (A319/A320 and B737/757) . A lot of that is BofA traffic since they have large operations in Boston. jetBlue would not be able to match that level of service. Whereas at RDU they would easily be able to match most anything the other airlines would try and throw at them.

Same with MCO where USAirways has 8 dailys all on B757. That level of service would be hard for jetBlue to compete with.
