SQ 747-400, Which Ones Are No Longer In Service?

Wed Jul 26, 2006 1:29 am

I was browsing through the photo database and came across this photo of Air Pacific. It looks like the interior of a former SQ 744 aircraft.

a) Can anyone tell me what is the config of Air Pacific's B744s that were formerly SQ aircrafts? Did Air Pacific retrofit their first and business class cabins or did they retain SQ's Skysuites and Spacebed in First and Business respectively?

b) Can anyone advise how many of SQ's B744 have left the fleet (what are their reg.numbers?) and where/whom were they sold/leased out to?

Thanks

I don;t know the registration numbers, but two of the earliest ones went to Air Atlanta and have now been sold on to the new carrier Oasis Hong Kong Airlines which intend flying HKG-LGW from the autumn.
Just when I thought I could see light at the end of the tunnel, it was some B*****d with a torch bringing me more work

4 will be converted for MP as cargo a/c (24061, 24066, 24226, 24975) The last 3 are currently in service with Air India.

Two were flying for Iberia until recently, leased from Air Atlanta. The aircraft are now headed for Oasis Hong Kong. The Singapore regs were 9V-SMC and 9V-SME. The two Air Pacific birds were formally 9V-SMD and 9V-SMB.

THanks guys for the update. It looks like the ones that had been sold/leased were all from their first batch of 744s... pretty old aircraft by SQ standards.

Can anyone tell me if Air Pacific retained SQ's FIrst and Business class seats on those ex-SQ aircrafts?

FJ doesn't offer F class, but i'm pretty sure J class seats are the same ones used by SQ.

9V-SMQ is flying for EL AL now. And 3 are also flying PAX for CX and another 3 to be converted to 744BCF's for CX Cargo.

6 more 744's are due to leave this year as SQ takes delivery of its A380's and 77W's. Always sad to see great aircraft leave their original owner.

Hi, those two Air Pacific 744's as far as I know are OWNED by SQ however are on a lease (dont ask what type of lease!!)

Before entering service with Air pacific, they were operated by ansett Australia as ANA and ANB before the collapse.

When Air pacific take delivery of the 787's in 2009?? The two 744's will go back to SQ.

From a Flight International article in March:

"Used 747s find home at Oasis
Long-haul start-up carrier Oasis Hong Kong Airlines has acquired two used Boeing 747-400s, moving it a step closer to launching services.Oasis has purchased two ex-Singapore Airlines 747-400s from Deucalion Capital, which is owned by Germany’s DVB Bank.
The aircraft, which were built in 1989, are due for delivery in July, after which they will undergo maintenance. The 747-400s are currently in service with Iberia, which is wet-leasing them from Air Atlanta.
Oasis is aiming to launch services in September between its Hong Kong base and London Gatwick. It says it will offer fares substantially lower than the incumbent airlines operating between Hong Kong and London Heathrow."

A brief quote from an article from Air Transport Intelligence (unfortunately subscription only website):

"German transport finance specialist DVB Bank has revealed itself as the buyer of four Singapore Airlines Boeing 747-400 aircraft, taking the jets through its Deucalion Capital aviation fund.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) stated last month that it had signed a conditional agreement to sell the aircraft which are presently on lease to other operators – two are with Fiji’s Air Pacific and two with Air Atlanta Icelandic.

Each of the aircraft with their associated leases has been acquired by a separate special-purpose vehicle company."

Are the Great Wall freighters also ex SQ?

Thanks for the very detailed updates!! It's amazing how knowledgeable many a.net members are!  Smile

I never realised that so many of SQ's 744s have left the fleet. It's a shame as we will be seeing fewer and fewer of SQ's 744 at Changi now. No wonder it always seemed like Changi is filled with SQ777 tails!

The 2 FJ 744's (I've been on both) have FJ seat covers- business class is in the nose and part of zone B- economy is upstairs. The bassinetts, however, are all SQ (colors and logo). The PTV's half work (the games don't). DQ-FJL is in slightly better condition interiorwise than FJK. In-flight service, however, is fine. Ground handling (subcontracted) at NAN- appalling.

Thanks ETA. What kind of business class seats does the FJ cabin have? Did they re-use the ones that were fitted on SQ (Ultimo seats. 9VSMB and SMD were never fitted with Spacebeds) or did FJ retrofit the aircraft with their own business seats?

Here're pictures of the two different business class seats that used to be available on SQ's 744s.

Spacebed (fitted on all 744s currently in service)

Ultimo Seats (fitted on all 744s before the Spacebed came about. I suspect 9VSMB and SMD, which FJ is now operating were never fitted with Spacebed, and would have been fitted with the Ultimo Seats before they were sold to FJ)

Does that give you a better idea. They are not lie flat beds. In fact they are nowhere near that. And the seats are not ex-SQ, I have been on one of the 2 FJ 747's, and was not really impressed. IFE is much worse than SQ's and is always breaking down in-flight.

From FJ website : "Business: Located in A-Zone (nose) 57" pitch, 12" recline, in-seat video with 22 video channels and 12 audio channels. Configuration: 28 Business Class/430 Economy Class"
