Why Do Airlines Still Use The 732

Wed Jul 26, 2006 2:12 am

Why do some airlines(esp in developed countries) still use the 732? it cant just be the cost of fleet renewal?

Thanks

Probably the same reason NW still uses the DC-9.

It is not just the cost of fleet renewal. The 732 is an excellent airframe, and several of the ones which are still flying have a number of hours left on them. So there is no reason to replace them.

Yep, Aerosvit Ukrainian has one for example, UR-BVY. They don't want to get rid of -BVY, regardless of how beat up it is, since it's owned, like the NW DC-9

AS, DL, and AQ uses them in the US.

AS uses them for freight ops but is replacing them with 734F.
http://www.alaskasworld.com/NEWS/2006/06/28_freighter.asp

DL is replacing them with CRJ's, and another type (presumbly 738).

AQ uses them for inter island routes and for freighter routes. I guessing the 738 will replace them if the load factors demand it. Otherwise im guessing the 736, or the 735. In another thread it said the 732,735 and 736 had the same specs.

Airlines evaluate the higher cost of operating older aircraft versus the cost of buying newer aircraft. It's about that simple. In the particular case of the B737-200, it the operating costs on very short routes are not too bad compared with newer aircraft. For longer routes, it's worth replacing them.

Some airlines like First Air and Canadian North still use them as there is no viable alternative jet to use on gravel air strips.

SV continued to use thier sterdy 732's years after they recieved the total 29 MD-90's they purchased to repace the 732.

I believe the main reason they kept them was because a few airports in Saudi were not ready to handle anything bigger or planes that needed longer runways, like BHH.

By now, with the introduction of the Embraer 170 they have retired them where many of them are stored at ELQ.

I will miss the long JT8D engines. Classic and unique!

Actually, I read somewhere that Aloha was in the market for used 737-200's, having something to do with the CFM-56s of the later 737s burning more fuel on such short inter-island flights than the P&W JT8Ds, making them uneconomical.

Why do some people drive old Minis, maybe it's because that's all they can afford.

You can buy a lot of fuel for the price of a 373NG or an A320. By the way they burn the fuel, they don't drink it.

They do to the 732 to what FX did to the DC-10 30/10 series. It'd be a hellva site. At least install hush kits to the 732's.

they use the plane because its a classic, a plane that everyone loves and will miss. like the 707, and the 3holers that NW flies. classic that will never leave.

Compare the MTOW of the 732 against later variants (especially the NG series...).

It becomes apparent that the 737 series has evolved (along with customer needs) from being primarily short-haul, medium capacity lift to being on the mid to high end of the narrow body spectrum, medium range. Along with that, the later 737's are carrying around lots of extra weight-not needed for the short-haul role it was originally built for. Therefore, the newer 737's are burning a lot more fuel on the 30 to 45 minute hops with quick turns that the 732 was designed for...

Surely there must be some older 733s and 735s going cheap now? These would be more economical....and pass noise and pollution emissions rules

From A.net's own AC data entry on the 735:

Quote:
The 737-500's main appeal is for operators of large 737-400 and 737-300 fleets, as because the 500 is a shortened development of the 300, it still carries much of the structural weight needed for the higher weight models. This makes it less efficient than if it was designed specifically for its size category, however for operators of large 737-300/400 fleets, the extensive commonality benefits more than compensate for this.

The 732 isn't nearly as dirty as, say, the Convair 990, the 707 w/Conways, or a myriad of other vintage jetliners that I've seen leave smoke trails  Smile

A fleet renewal is not that simple and easy. Beleive me, if it was, you would only see 737NGs, A320s, 777s, A330s, A340s flying around...

Probably the same reason NW still uses the DC-9.

An addage in our industry: We use everything from the piggy except the squeal! or, everything on the cow except the moo!

These old birds may consume fuel the way Christy Brinkly's cad hubby consumes teen girls but, if they hold up, it is still cheaper than buying new.

For some of them, especially startup LCCs, it's the only type of aircraft that is affordable.

I believe in the case of Delta, some of their 737-200's were some of the last off the production line. That was in the late 1980's and that wasn't all that long ago. I'm sure there are plenty of 757s, 767s, A320's, MD-80s that are older than some of the -200's still in the sky.

I just watched one of Delta's 737-200's depart PWM for CVG a few hours ago and it was a beautiful machine that I wouldn't hesitate to step onboard. With the new paint it looked as good as new.
