N American Airliner To Serve CAI Non Stop?

Wed Jul 26, 2006 3:09 am

I know in the past there have been north american airlines that have served CAI direct from the states though since 9/11 I believe those flights ceased. Now, to travel to the great country of Egypt one has to connect from a myriad of other countries, most commonly France, Italy, and Spain among others. I am sure it is only a matter of time until a north american airline begins non stop service from the states (New York? Atlanta?) to CAI. The question is, what airline is most likely to start this service and from what airport? CAI is rich in history and appears to be a huge tourist draw. Also, CAI doesn't appear to be that distant from the NY area and would a B767-300ER have the legs to make such a trip?

Your comments and ideas are all welcome

Egyptair serve JFK and YUL nonstop with a B777

As far as Us carrier... probably CO from EWR, Delta or AA from JFK and UA from ORD and IAD would be a Start

hi jumpoJet
this subject has been discussed so many times, and lots of people including myself think that a Us carrier will start flying to CAI after the New Terminal T3 Opens in 2007.
the following link to another thread where you going to find lots of answers to your questions  Smile.US Airlines And Cairo hope that helps.

I do agree with you that CO or DL might be first to go to CAI, AA i don't think so for now, and UA I hope even though i don't see it happening soon.
I think once one US Airline start flying that Route it will encourage others to fly there.

would like to, saw a special on Cairo on the history channel last night and it looks unbelievable. Thanks for the link to the other post.

Looks like I'd be taking DL from JFK to CDG then Air France the rest of the way.

well from JFK you have many options, only EgyptAir fly Non-Stop to CAI.
but since you thinking about DL from JFK so i'm guessing that you are a delta frequent flyer, which still gives you couple of more options since you can fly any skyteam member and earn millage.
from JFK you can fly either DL, AZ, AF, KLM, CSA plus there is more options LH, BA all of this have easy connection to Cairo since they fly from their home town directly to CAI.

I'd like to add my two cents to this thread simply because it's something I've been talking about since 2002. As you may (or may not) know pre-9/11 2 US carriers served the Egyptian capital:

-- TWA/American Airlines: 6x weekly B763 flights routing JFK-CAI-RUH-CAI-JFK.
-- Delta Airlines: 3x weekly MD-11 flights routing JFK-CAI-DXB-CAI-JFK.

Both TWA and DL cancelled their flights in September and October 2001 respectively. DL were supposed to restart flights on 15MAR2002 but it never materialised. Egyptair continued their CAI-JFK route but discontinued their LAX extension and since 2002 their CAI-JFK-CAI flights have gone from strength to strength and from June this year it became a daily B777 service ( Egyptair Go Daily To JFK (Year-Round) (by Horus Mar 24 2006 in Civil Aviation) ). This was soon followed by the launch of dedicated cargo flights to JFK with leased Evergreen B742Fs ( Egyptair To Launch 747 Freighter Flights To JFK (by Horus Apr 14 2006 in Civil Aviation) ).

Several sources have suggested US carriers will once again initiate services to Cairo. No airline has been mentioned, so I can only speculate about the future. I can see DL launching B763 JFK-CAI flights during Summer06 or Summer07 at the latest. ATL-CAI is a good possibility considering the amount of connections DL have out of the airport but the length of the trip might be pushing the B763 to the limit and the airline has no spare B777s to utilise.

CO is another possibility with their rapid international expansion and EWR-JFK seems to be the logical choice. Again I see the B763 being the aircraft of choice here.

UA is an unlikely contender however they did surprise us all earlier this year when they announced IAD-KWI flights. AA are unlikely to return to CAI too.

Until any of the above carriers make a move, MS and European carriers like BA, LH, KL, AZ, etc (via their respective hubs) will continue to dominate the US-CAI market.

These 2 threads I started might interest you: US Airlines And Egypt (by Horus Mar 3 2005 in Civil Aviation) US Airlines And Cairo (by Horus Jun 2 2006 in Civil Aviation)

On a personal note Jumbojet, I'm glad to hear you're real interest and enthusiasm regarding Egypt and hope you get the opportunity to visit the country soon.

"Egypt Continues to Experience Double-Digit Growth in U.S. Tourism in 2006
Americans continue to visit Egypt in numbers not seen since record setting 2000. The trend continued in May 2006 when 18,935 Americans visited Egypt, a 16.3% increase over the same period in 2005."

While CO is a possibility, they do not operate any 763s and are short of a/c with legs to do EWR-CAI nonstop.

I do agree with you but at the same time with the competition between CO and DL for NY Market, i would say if DL relaunch CAI we might see CO following soon.

Yes I forgot their only B767s are B762s and B764s. Do they have outstanding orders or options for more widebodies?

Theres a few more 777's being built, and of course the 20 787s. Hopefully, they can find a 762 or 764 to do EWR-CAI, it'll save me from doing SLC-IAH-EWR-FCO on CO then FCO-ATH on Aegean and ATH-CAI on EgyptAir, although that WAS quite fun. I might do that again next spring, who knows!
