I'd like to add my two cents to this thread simply because it's something I've been talking about since 2002. As you may (or may not) know pre-9/11 2 US carriers served the Egyptian capital:
-- TWA/American Airlines: 6x weekly B763 flights routing JFK
-- Delta Airlines: 3x weekly MD
-11 flights routing JFK
Both TWA and DL
cancelled their flights in September and October 2001 respectively. DL
were supposed to restart flights on 15MAR2002 but it never materialised. Egyptair continued their CAI-JFK
route but discontinued their LAX
extension and since 2002 their CAI-JFK
-CAI flights have gone from strength to strength and from June this year it became a daily B777 service ( Egyptair Go Daily To JFK (Year-Round) (by Horus Mar 24 2006 in Civil Aviation)
). This was soon followed by the launch of dedicated cargo flights to JFK
with leased Evergreen B742Fs ( Egyptair To Launch 747 Freighter Flights To JFK (by Horus Apr 14 2006 in Civil Aviation)
Several sources have suggested US carriers will once again initiate services to Cairo. No airline has been mentioned, so I can only speculate about the future. I can see DL
launching B763 JFK
-CAI flights during Summer06 or Summer07 at the latest. ATL
-CAI is a good possibility considering the amount of connections DL
have out of the airport but the length of the trip might be pushing the B763 to the limit and the airline has no spare B777s to utilise.
is another possibility with their rapid international expansion and EWR
seems to be the logical choice. Again I see the B763 being the aircraft of choice here.
is an unlikely contender however they did surprise us all earlier this year when they announced IAD
-KWI flights. AA
are unlikely to return to CAI too.
Until any of the above carriers make a move, MS
and European carriers like BA
, etc (via their respective hubs) will continue to dominate the US-CAI market.
