DET Airport Launches Air Passenger Service

Wed Jul 26, 2006 3:11 am

Per the news...

Flights will run between Detroit, Cleveland and Cincinnati.
The service is from a Cleveland-based Charter Company called Destination One. A round-trip ticket to Cleveland will cost $341.00 and a round trip ticket to Cincinnati will cost $428.00.

The service will start July 31.

I wonder if that price includes armed escorts to and from the DET terminal...

Cleveland to Hilton Head. I am not sure I want to spend over 3 hours in a EMB-120 for $395. I can buy a much cheaper airfare to SAV for much shorter time.

Yeah since airports tend to be located in only the best areas of town, i.e. EWR!

I've 1hr and 30min on a Comair E120 MCO-NAS and back to MCO. Not that bad. I could do 3hrs on Dash 8 easily.

Btw, $849 rond trip. I can get a chaper walk up fare.

fascinating... it's a very good idea, but gonna take a lot. I'm suprised they don't go from DET to bigger markets like New York or MDW. Well, this is worth watching for sure.

DET didn't work for Southwest. It will be interesting to see if this works.

They must have some guaranteed business to be starting up these routes. Cleveland has three really big law firms that could be behind it. They can't be planning to live off of walk-up tourists.

One-stop to Hilton Head at over three hours does seem a bit long, although it's had to get to SAV in less time. Two and a quarter to Kiawah isn't bad at all, though. The fares? If you can afford the greens fees, you can afford the fares.

Added: For comparison, CLE-DTW r/t fares for a two day trip next week on CO or NW are over $400.

A relative of mine is tied in with this venture, and he was telling me that they already have pretty solid bookings for both routes. Lots of business travellers willing to pay for the convience. The parent company also runs lots of charters on ERJs that they picked up from, I believe, ExpressJet.

I've checked on fares from DTW-CLE and these guys seem to be competitive. DET is in a ROUGH part of town and I would worry about my car if I left it in a parking area at DET.

This is basically a glorified charter operation. I wouldn't get to excited about the return of air service to DET. This is a niche operation at best.

I agree! Flights from BKL would be very convenient for east-side Clevelanders. Of course CGF would be even better...we can all dream.

I just checked out a ticket BKL-DET-BKL and it's $212.85 for mid August, that's pretty reasonable.

Best of luck to them!

they currently have 3 aircraft tied to this service. N651CT and N652CT will be doing most of the flying at 1st. N267AS is the other one, its in Fla right now and will probably be there for awhile yet.

It will be interesting to how these new routes do for Destination One. I agree that a lot of the big legal and financial firms here in Cleveland would love the easy logistics of this service, though the weekend golfer flights seem to be a bit of a stretch.

I am surprise that Columbus or Pittsburgh were not on the list, though they may not have a smaller airport closer to downtown.

Pittsburgh has Allegheny County Airport, about 8 miles SE of downtown. Maybe it will be come with the arrival of the third aircraft.

I remember liking Brasilias (need for speed); hope I get a chance to try this service.

An article in 7-27-06 Detroit Free Press stated that the best year for the airport was in 1990 with 782,679 passengers. That was when Southwest was there. How long was Southwest at DET?

Don't forget ProAir who operated from DET for several years.
Early on they were quite successful.

Their frequency doesnt seem high enough. Also the EM-120 might be a bit big for these routes. Nothing good can come from low frequency with "large" planes in a business market.

Fly those routes 5-7x Mon-Fri with Beech 1900s or Cessna 402s.

Weekends charter them out. I am not sure that would work either, but a business plan with a EMB-120 and 1-2 weekday flights per market wont work unless they have a contract with some big company already.

The might make it. Long time ago wright Airlines flew DET to BKL with CV 440's and did well.

There once was a very successful operator between BKL and DET; TAG Airlines.

The fare oneway between the two airports was $14.00, which by the way was higher than the $10.00 fare charged by the major airlines between DTW and CLE.

They did really good business until a fatal crash squashed public confidence.

$14.00 in 2006 dollars is $89.16.

Add in 2006 fuel prices and $99.00 one way on this new carrier looks pretty reasonable.

I believe DET was working for Southwest. I flew out of there during that time and the terminal was packed. However WN wanted longer concrete from the City of Detroit and they didn't get it.

In reference to the above I parked my car in the fenced in lot which is just north of the terminal and had no problems with safety issues. If there was an issue relating to parking is that you needed to get there early to insure getting a spot. Parking space was limited.

Whatever the reason, they pulled out. So clearly, as i said, it wasn't working for them. I couldn't understand why they tried to service both fields at the same time anyway.

I have heard from those on the inside at WN, that DET became an issue of safety. Nothing more.

how did this airline go undetected for so long? Shouldn't it have been big news if the airline wanted to make a splash and really get into the market??

True. The existing 15/33 couldn't be extended due to cemetaries at either end, so there was talk of building a parallel to 15/33. That ran into a snag, since a rail line that needed to be relocated would have resulted in too sharp a curve, and not properly lined up with an existing railroad bridge over the freeway.

Given their route system, they don't really need much of a splash outside of Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Detroit. In the days of Tag, Wright, Freedom, all people ever saw was a small box on the business pages of local papers and a billboard or two.

Which makes me wonder, did Comair ever try these in-town airports during its pre-Delta days?

no but I think that Wright Airlines did.....before they merged in the mid 80s with Aeromech they flew Convair 600s and 640s into and out of Burke and Detroit City...to Cincinnati and Dayton and Columbus....
