Your Opinion On Northwest Airlines

Sat Jun 24, 2000 1:59 am

A while ago, I have seen a lot of Northwest Bashing. They were often called "NorthWORST". Recently, I have seen many good comments about Northwest. So, I'm wondering if you think of Northwest as a terrible airline or a great one. I've been on Northwest many times, and they are one of my favorite airlines. What do you think?

I'm sorry..but this is becoming a tiring subject...it been discuss on and on and on..and I'm tired of it...sorry, that how I feel about it..I think we should focus on "how" to improve NWA's service (whether they're good or bad).

I don't mean to be inconsiderate, but if you're tired of this subject, then don't respond to it...simply ignore it. I, however, think it's great people are starting to compliment Northwest's service, instead of complaining about it.

I'll Try To Avoid Them....

Sat Jun 24, 2000 7:08 am

AFter having made really bad experiences with NW during my last private and business trips to the USA, I try to avoid them now.

On our last flight in december 1999 from Newark to Amsterdam their ground staff was absolutely ignorant and was treating us in an absolutely inacceptable way :

I came home from a business trip to Seattle and Miami and was booked in Business class. My wife flew alone in economy to the Miami and joined me there. In order to spend the return flight together, she purchased upgrade vouchers for the return trip which she paid with her frequent flyer mileage. the upgrade certificates were sent to us by fax from KLM.

Now, in Newark, the checkin girl refused to give her a seat in Business class. Even after we showed the upgrade voucher for this specific flight to her, she told us "pff, that's just a piece of paper, everybody can produce this".... Finally she yelled at us and called us liars and that we should move our a**es from the counter and finally get on board.
A longer debate with her supervisor finally brought us the seats in Business class. But, maybe as a kind of "revenge" she cancelled my wife's continuing flight from AMS to Berlin and also just sent our bags to AMS rather than to Berlin.

I reported these incidents to the travel office of my former company and you can be sure that all their future USA business trips won't be on NW anymore!

The planes are old, dirty and the seats are cramped in. Otherwise the service is all right, the F/A's are nice and if you travel with them you'll likely arrive at your destination on time if not early. NW is making great strides in improving the airline and customer satisfaction and in the forseeable future they may just be right back up there with the other majors.

Do a search before you submit these stupid topics that have been discussed 50 times beforehand. It is because of people like you that so many credible users are leaving airliners.net!

It all depends on who you talk to. I have flown NWA several times and was satisfied... I've flown from DTW to SEL and DTW to PEK on NWA, along with several domestic flights, and had great satisfaction. Someone else I know said that with their former employer, their travel policy stated that they could refuse NWA for a more expensive carrier.

I think people forget that airlines the size of NW (or AA, or DL, or UA, for that matter) are bound to drop the ball sometimes. By the same token, they'll deliver stellar -- if not satisfactory -- performance more often than not. Also, I reeeeallllly think a lot of the traveling public tends to bash airlines based on what they've heard others say. If they've heard and read from six other people about "how horrible" airline X was, then that person has got to come up with his own anecdote about that "horrible airline," even if he has only flown it once and the service was sufficient.

NW has just been the trendiest carrier to bash over the past few years. You'd be considered odd if you were to say NW was your "favorite airline."

Though I work for UA, I take NW quite frequently (non-rev of course) only because I have relatives in both Detroit and Minneapolis. (NW offers frequent nonstops between those cities and the NYC area, which UA doesn't do.) I must say that contrary to what I read & hear, about 7 out of 10 flights are actually AS GOOD as any other airline. The cabin crews are excellent, and the planes' interiors are ALWAYS clean. (Customer service and gate agents could use a little more people skills though.)

BTW, this forum seems to specialize in frequent UA bashing and an unusual degree of DL praising quite often.

Now this I really don't understand!

Although my favorite airline is Continental, which is partners with Northwest, I do think that Northwest isn't a great airline. They have terrible delays at MSP, and the service isn't great either. Once, I flew on Northwest Airlines flight from TPA enroute to MSP, the flight time should've been around 3 hours, but it turned out to be a 5 hour flight. Why? Because we had to refuel at Fargo, North Dakota. So, in my opinion, I would try to avoid NWA as much as possible.
