Legacy Liveries

Thu Jul 27, 2006 3:07 am

Which of the world's legacy carriers has kept their original livery to this day?
If none, which airline has retained their livery without changes for the longest time? Lufthansa, Air France, American?

AA has had the same since 1968.

Probably almost every airline that wears the country flag as a tail logo kept it and is still keeping it with very little changes. I can think of AF and SR LX

AA has remained unchanged since 1968, as already pointed out. (Good on them too, I think it looks timeless and distinctive!)

I think that except for Air France, as mentioned above, the designs of airlines like WN, AC and SR have changed, especially on the fuselage. For instance, AC has changed from an encircled, angular Maple leaf on a red tail with silver, red and white fuselage to a organic looking one on green dots.

Iberia's has been around unchanged since the 1970's, as has Alitalia's. Singapore Airlines has had a minor make-over of it's original 1970's livery, but the basic design is virtually identical to the design that took flight in 1972. While it is not unchanged, I think the variations are minor in comparison to other airline livery changes.

Other designs still around that are more than 20 years old are Qantas, Royal Jordanian, ANA and Malaysian.

Air India's earliest jetliner photo on the db is a 707 from 1960 and the livery looks pretty much identical to todays 777's. They experimented with a different scheme in the late '80's or early '90's, but it was abandoned in the face of popular opposition.

As with the other "oldies but goodies" mentioned above, I hope these classy colours fly for many more years!

Alitalia's was introduced in 1969 to celebrate the May 1970 arrival of their first 747-143 "Neil Armstrong"

I kinda wish AA would drop the A's on each side of the eagle, and enlarge the eagle itself. IMO it would look alot classier.

That distincition would go to AA, which currently has the oldest, completely un-altered livery in the world, going on 38 years old.

I agree. I love AA's simple livery. However I think they could update the font on the American letters on the side.

Nonetheless it is timeless.

AA may have a livery that has longevity, but it is certainly nothing like their original livery from TriMotor and DC3 days.

I believe that the answer to the OP's question is NONE. No legacy carrier flies in their original livery.
