A380 @ LAX

Thu Jul 27, 2006 10:31 am

Before I write my inquiry, I did do a search both here on the Anet forum and did a google search but could not find the answer.

I seem to recall back in January/February this year, it was announced that the A380 would visit LAX in August. Well, it's getting close to that time, and does anyone know if a firm date/time has been set for the aircraft's arrival? Has the date been pushed back a bit?

I assume it will be with the completion of the new 25L runway, and the 2 A380 gates at TBIT. The A380 visit at LAX will be to validate that these facilities work.
Does anyone know when the above will be completed?

They just started the work on the runway. I understand completion won't be until late 2007. So no 380 visit to LAX anytime soon.
I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.

gate 101 in TBIT should be finished... it was sue to be finished on the 19th of this month, then on the 20th they started work on gate 102, for the A380!

I am having a hard time finding info on LAX's website as to when to the runway will start to be worked on/when they will finish it.

The 25L runways work which starts on July 28th at 2300L is not contingent on A380 ops. The 25L work is simply to build a parallel taxiway between 25R/25L to reduce the amount on runway incursions the airport has experienced in the past.

As far as A380 demo ops to LAX, John Leahy had made a comment to LA City officials that the airport would be the first US Airport to see the A380 on a world tour as a thank you to them for making facility changes at LAX to accommodate A380 ops.

Lets see if this turns out to be true.

Sorry to drag this one up again...will the visit of the A380 to LAX be dependent on finishing the work on 25L, the taxiway work, and the terminal upgrades at TBIT? If so, that means we won't see the A380 at LAX for a very long time. Even more concerning is that A380 operators won't be able to fly to LAX with that equipment...

If a visit of the A380 is not dependent on all or some of these works-in-progress, is there any tentative date set before we see the whalejet grace the smoggy skies of LAX?

What about SFO? We're ready to take it now. So when will it visit?

Nope.. LAX can handle an A380 today if it had to. The runways are stressed, there are acceptable taxi routes, and one TBIT gate along with a couple remotes could handle the A380.

As far as a date, I've not heard anything official. I know Airbus-John Leahy had promised city leaders to make LAX the first US airport to host the A380 on a future world tour. I've also heard bit and pieces that both Qantas and Singapore were interested in showing off the A380 at LAX.

SFO is more than ready with 6 gates handling A380s, at LAX, I know the 4 remote gates are been modified to handle A380s.

After reading the master plan, besides extending TBIT west to replace current remote gates, there's a talk of demolishing T1-3 in order to expand the north runway, how is this possible w/o disrupting airlines in those terminals?

Does SFO really need 6 A380 gates? What airlines besides SQ are planning to use them there?

It will be one of LH first A380 destinations (if not THE first A380 destination)

What difference does it make though? It's not like those gates can ONLY handle the 380.

Keep in mind that planners are doing this for long term prospects, SQ may be the only carrier using A380 in the coming years, but in 15-30 years, others will be using them too (given the slot shortage at other major Asian/European gateways, the only way to expand will be aircraft size), namely BA, AF, CA, even AI and EK.

True, I guess it doesn't really matter but CA, AI, and BA haven't ordered A380s.
