Pilgrim Airlines Employee Reunion Thread!

Sat Jul 29, 2006 7:22 am

Well, a virtual reunion anyway!

At the suggestion of my buddy Dtwclipper, I thought it would be fun to see how many of you out there "wore the green" at some point in your past airline careers?

Pilgrim was a very colorful airline in its day and pioneered a few firsts in the US as well:

- the first to fly the DeHavilland Twin Otter (though I know some ZW people might still have a little dispute over that fact)

- the first US carrier to fly the Fokker F-27

- the first US carrier to make its customer service employees wear KELLY GREEN BLAZERS or SKIRTS (for the women!) LOL

Let's hear where you worked, what you did and some of your stories and memories! And I'm sure that if you worked at PM, you've got some gems!

I worked for PM from 1983 till (and through) the Business Express takeover. I started as a station agent in BDR and then flew as a F/A on the F-27s.

Lets hear from all of ya!

Hi Tony...

This is so funny.

Before I went to NY, I was at JFK and LGA.

I have to admit I don't miss those Green outfits.

I was also working JFK when we lost N148PM

Flight attendats/CSR's/Pilots would all get together and have a blast! I hope more people will respond. I loved the FA's! Well, I grew up in the Groton/New London area and flew on Pilgrim from Groton to LGA on a Twin Otter... and later worked for BEX from 1995 till the end... in fact I may very well have been the last hourly employee on the pay roll..!! As for the partys, the stories were still legendary at BEX years later.

First to fly the DHC-6 Twin Otter......
First to fly the Fokker F-27....
One of, if not the first 'Regional' to fly an RJ... the Fokker F-28...

And a true RJ it really was -- just way ahead of its time! I seem to remember it seating only about 60 or so - was a cute looking plane!

But i think Empire was flying the F28 before Grim started, no?

Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't the Cheif Pilot a HUGE man? I "think" I have the right airline.

Yep youre right there. Actually PM can still claim the first of the smallest of the F28s (series 3000 i think?) as UR's were all of the larger series.

Yes youre very right about that one. His name escapes me, but I remember several times watching the poor guy try and climb in and out of the cockpit in the F-27. Always felt sorta sorry for him. Never did see him climb in and out of any of the Otters tho ! LOL

You are very right....But what about Joe Fugere, founder of PM!

Pilgrim Airlines
Pilgrim Airlines was one of several commuter operators to popularize the Twin Otter, originally a bush-country aircraft, but which proved to be an ideal commuter plane, especially for the demanding Northeast air corridor. When the Twin Otters arrived at Groton-New London Airport, Pilgrim was running one route to Kennedy (NY); and in 1986, the planes were replaced with new Beechcraft 1900 airliners. Flights to Boston began in 1972. Pilgrim Airlines, founded by Joseph M. Fugere, soon became the third largest regional carrier operating in New England. Its beginning was as a small air taxi service out of the Waterford Airport, serving mostly Electric Boat personnel, with only four planes and seven employees. But Fugere saw the need for extended commuter service in the area and moved the business to Groton in 1962. At one point, Pilgrim grew to encompass 26 planes with over 400 employees. In 1986, Pilgrim and NewAir Flight, Inc. (New Haven) were acquired by Business Express (Marketing Corp. of America, Westport), opening up valuable New York and Washington markets. Combined, the two airlines served over 500,000 passengers in 1985. Following the sale of Pilgrim, Fugere formed JMF Aircraft, an airplane leasing company. Fugere, a Navy veteran and former jet pilot, passed away at the age of 66 on September 23, 2001.

I was surprised to hear that he just passed away within the last year or two.

He had the rep of being a real tough guy (and I'm sure he was when he needed to be). But I had one of the nicest experiences with him on one of my fllights once. As he deplaned, he shook my hand and had some very nice words about my performance. This meant alot to me at that time because I was very new and pretty nervous when I saw him board -along with the Chief F/A- as passengers ! And it was no easy flight either - DCA-GON full load .. and we had to divert to BDL due to WX in GON! LOL

Actually that was the nice F-27 - the only one that had the overhead bins. Remember the rest of them had the old fashioned looking open coat racks .. VERY 50s looking LOL!
