British Airways 777 At SFO?

Sat Jul 29, 2006 10:31 pm

Hey all,

I just flew into work this morning at SFO and saw a BA 777 over at Superbay, more towards the AA side. Anyone have any idea what it's doing here? The way it's parked is usually how special charters are for VIP's.

Any ideas?

Tony Blair is doing something in California this weekend, he went there after a meeting with Bush - hence the BA 777

If somebody could just lock him in a cell in Alcatraz and leave him there with his gold-digging wife, that would be wonderful.

I'm sure this has been discuss it before...but doesn't UK have a private plane for the PM? If so...why he's always flying on BA 777?

Well, he could use the Royal Flight, but I doubt a Bae 146 can fly UK-USA without making at least 6 stops  Wink

Since the end of Concorde,

Blair uses a BA 777 or charters the Privatair A319.
Depending on the number of PA's and press-jetters he's got flying with him.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

Actually he's meeting with Senior Executives of Rupert Murdoch's News International. His (Murdoch's) support for Blair and New Labour has been wavering just recently with News International's tabloid UK newspaper, the Sun, sometimes being critical recently. So I guess the real reason for visiting the USA at this time was not to see George Bush (who has little influence over Blair's and New Labour's future) and too discuss the Lebanon but to meet with the News International guys who have a strong influence on British voters who, of course, are paying for the cost of that BA 772 at SFO.

They are meeting in Pebble Beach in the Monterey area. Interesting that Clinton and Gore (Democratic Party) will be there and not Bush. I thought Murdock's FOX News Network was all about the Republican Party..... 24/7.

"Tony Blair, the British Prime Minister, arrived in San Francisco Friday evening as part of a five-day trip to the Golden State. The Tony Blair visit marks the first to California by a serving British leader, according to published reports.

Blair is expected to dine today at the Russian Hill home of former Secretary of State George Shultz. On Sunday, Blair will to join San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom in a tour of the Delancey Street Foundation -- the bay area-based drug and substance abuse program.

Blair's visit to California has a little bit of everything:, reports the San Francisco Chronicle, "serious environmental discussions, business meetings, a foreign affairs speech -- and a star-powered, incredibly eclectic gathering of world thinkers, leaders and luminaries in posh Pebble Beach.""

does anyone know if the plane will be properly visable from within/outside the airport?

I just got back from SFO and saw it parked over near the SuperBay. When the PM departs, I would say he will use the 28s.

A little off topic but when the PM is on board, what is their call sign?

Yes she does, but the issue with Cherie is that she earns extra cash from playing on the fact that she is the wife of the prime minister. Being Mrs Blair, sorry Booth, she appeared at a cancer charity fundraiser in Australia, however it is alleged that the charity paid her a fee to attend on top of expenses (I bet she didn't fly Y class either!).

Thanks for the info...if I go to spot on the day he departs, I should be able to get their calls sign, but I might go tomorrow since its easier for me to spot on a Sunday rather than a weekday....

I dunno, Rupert Murdock gave glowing praise to Hillary Clinton in an interview not too long ago....Murdock is savvy, I'm sure News Corp will follow the political pulse of the nation.

Too bad he'd never get to fly on it at this point. In the US we couldn't do that, because we'd never be able to decide whether the president should fly on United or American, or perhaps Southwest?

I find it impressive BA has enough spare 777s to just be able to hand him one whenver it's needed.

Yeah I agree, however it's used fairly regularly and recently made a none-stop trip from BRU-MEL which is quite impressive! I guess they ordered an extra one and charge the government accordingly.

It's not just for Blair! BA is a commercial beast. And recently on a trip to South Africa Blair did not charter a BA aircraft. Instead he chartered a Swiss VIP DC-8. However the DC-8 went tech at JNB. BA had the last laugh when they flew him and his party home on a scheduled flight.

BA use their 'spare' 772 to cover for maintenance on the rest of the fleet, for back-up and for non-government charters.

It's a BA operated aircraft, the callsign SHOULD be "Speedbird xxxx" usually a 4-figure number, ending in 'C'. Like BA9843C. We use C for charters, E for engineering flights, usually LHR-CWL, eg. BA9143E.

I thought the call sign was Sparrowhawk when the PM is aboard, but i'm not sure if that may just be for RAF flights.

Yes. The government - i.e. we tax payers - will pick up the bill. However the media travel with Blair and the government charges them getting some of the cost back.

The 777 is still here, but is being serviced as we speak. It is scheduled to leave around 1330 local time, and will depart for LAX as BAW9131. Just a heads up.  Smile

I was going to bring the 30D out today, but decided it was just too much to lug around here on the ramp. Either way, the plane is pretty, and sorry I couldn't provide ya'll with any runway side shots!
