MOD To LAS Or PHX With US: Viable?

Sun Jul 30, 2006 3:17 am

Hi

All in the title really, I understand that the runway isn't large enough but if it was or if US could us one of the SAABs, would it be viable. Just some Q's below?

Which is more viable: LAS or PHX?
What aircraft would US use?
If runway was large enough would it be mainline?

Quoting Dsa (Thread starter):

US doesn't have any west coast Saabs yet.

Quoting Dsa (Thread starter):

LAS would be closer, however PHX would offer more connections, unless they flew a flight to connect to the LAS red-eye bank.

Quoting Dsa (Thread starter):

CRJ, mainline would be too much for MOD to start with, and a CRJ would be plenty.

Quoting Dsa (Thread starter):

A CRJ should be able to make it off of MOD's runway on a short flight like LAS, and an A319 could do it considering SNA is actually a couple hundred feet shorter.

But which PHX or LAS? And would a CRJ be ok to PHX?

If they moved a few Q300s out west, it would have the same capacity as a CRJ, but would have the proformance to operate off of MOD's runway to PHX.

The CRJ is able to do MOD. It's been long debated, but the airport officials continue to suggest it would be of no issue. It would make more SENSE for US to do LAS, as it's the #1 requested route right now for MOD.

OO just started the LAX route out of MOD, and it's been holding quite strong. Even stronger now is SFO, as with the advertising of LAX, many people now realize there has been service for a long while to MOD, and to SFO...not just LAX. I fly through MOD 5-6 times a week, twice a day, and the loads are continually good. SFO usually ranges in the 23-28 range. There are a couple downtimes every now and then though. LAX has reported an 88-90% load factor thus far.

With the success of G4 in SCK in just a month (expanding from 3 flights to 5), it's almost stupid for any regional to not pick up LAS from MOD, including OO. However, it seems OO is very cautious in how things are planned and done, and usually takes an extra push to make a new route. An example of this is when MOD-LAX was announced, it was originally a QX deal, but OO jumped right in on it after the QX announcement. My guess is it would take something like this to happen again, however, YV would probably be the one to make the offer, and they don't usually give into OO very easy...or anyone for that matter! It's obvious a 30 seat plane, the EMB-120 (especially once a day), to LAS alone would be full everytime, especially taking into fact what G4 has done, as said. Time will tell I guess!

I for one would like to see LAS come to town...however, I don't want to over saturate the market. One example may be DEN...it's one of the top destinations out of MOD, however, adding such a route could hurt the loads on SFO or even LAX.

Food for thought!

So which airline is it most likely to be with? And what a/c?

It will be able to MOD easy, but the destination would have to be within 300 miles if they wish to take a full load in the summer.

Well,
Like I said, OO tends to shove when other airlines shove for the same market...and usually a market they are the only one at. However, I don't see YV giving up very easily if they opt for MOD-LAS and if OO doesn't do something about it first, I would say YV (US Air Express) would be the one to do the route. Time will tell...or not.

One other thing to note is that MCE is losing it's Scenic service to Vegas, so YV may try to pick up the pieces there. If that's the case, I really don't see them going for MOD.

MOD-LAS: 293.5 nautical miles WNW
MOD-PHX: 503.6 nautical miles WNW

So, with that, again, LAS is probably the more viable route.

Until a few years ago, HPExpress ran a couple of SCK-PHX RJ flights. From what I understand they were usually full. PHX would be a better connection hub than LAS for possible MOD flights.. As was already said, with Allegiant running flight to LAS out of SCK, MOD service to LAS would make not sense.

United flew 737-200s into MOD from SFO. I was on one of these flights, SFO-MOD-SCK in the 1970's. To my way of thinking, if a 737 could land and take off, why not an RJ.

US to PHX would probably be best.

Not for shorter distances.

They've got a Beech 1900 bid in for that EAS route and it's likely to win.
USAir A321 service now departing for SFO with fuel stops in CAK, COS and RNO. Enjoy your flight.

There is no need to serve Modesto as Stockton already has flights to Las Vegas..

His point is that you are allowing users to post at their leisure, and instead are demanding answers if people don't post in a short amount of time. This is not how a forum works. Also, your demanding posts are bumping up threads without really adding anything of relevance to the thread, which is not good netiquette.

If HP/US flew to PHX, I think most of us agree it would most likely be a CRJ-200.

If F9 ever did DEN (which I find unlikely) , it would surely be a CRJ-700. If UA ever did DEN, it would most likely be a CRJ-200 (it might have some weight restrictions, not sure).
