New Continental Airlines Website

Sun Jul 30, 2006 10:05 pm

It looks like CO has updated its website:

www.continental.com/

What are your thoughts? I, personally, prefer the old site.

I like the new site, it just seems bolder for some reason. Maybe it's the use of more blue.

Looks like almost the exact same setup but with a slightly cleaner look. Not too bad but nothing out of the ordinary. Still a good website every time I've used it for my flights on CO.

I like the new look, but it looks like they have an error on cookie handling (or have taken out the feature) to remember your one-pass number from visit to visit.

Is anyone else seeing this behaviour?

It seems that the new website has all the same content and features as the old one except they organized it a little differently and got a new menu bar. Every page is identical to the old one.

Their Flash asset is jacked up. It appears as just a big blue rectangle in Safari and Firefox. Or is there a deeper symbolism I'm missing?

I'm running XP Pro and I don't have any of the above issues... When I clicked on the new site, my OnePass number was listed in the box BESIDE where you enter a new number. Also showed my OnePass account balance.

From first glance, I like the new website... Will have to put it to use soon..

Have they now got rid of the flightview maps when you check on the status of a flight?

One thing they didn't change:

You can't check flight status on the homepage without knowing the flight number. You still have to be taken to the timetable. I know it's not a lot, but it is an extra step. Everyone else let's you put city codes in on the homepage.

Otherwise, I have always liked the site - it just looks a little cleaner now.

Very odd. I just tried looking up a round-trip on the new site, and even though travelocity.com gave me a selection of flights all day in both directions, continental.com only gave me one flight in each direction, even when I re-did my selection from by price to by schedule.

Using Safari on the Mac, the Calendar doesn't work either. I had to manually type in the dates.

Nice idea, very poorly executed.

Dutchjet-

I think it might be a problem with European (or non-North America) IP addresses. I'm in Poland at the moment, and I have tried it the past two days (Sunday and Monday) with both Firefox and IE and have gotten various errors. Yesterday, it was the error Chris mentioned, and today, the page that continental.com is redirecting me to does not exist. The sad thing is that they are going to lose my business over it because I have to book these flights one way or another. NW here I come...

The website has bits and pieces of others including:

Delta Airlines
Southwest Airlines
Air Tran
American Airlines

There is nothing original about it, and it is much worse than before!

I like a lot of it, but no longer, even when signed in, do your latest reservations show up on the front page. Now you have to click a link to display them.

As for the other problems, it's growing pains. It's been a few hours. I think the calendar thing will get fixed soon (though I've seen it never fixed for some websites, so that's more of a guarded optimism).

This was a problem on the old site too. Lose it at least 1/2 the time for me.

I heard this same lame comment when I showed people the preview.

NEWS FLASH:

those "bits and pieces" were there before the reorganization, for YEARS, and BEFORE most other carriers had them. Just because you didn't know, doesn't mean CO copied anyone. If anything, CO, being a leader in website checkin and organization, was copied by these other carriers.

But beyond that, all these airlines offer the same product: air service. One would assume their website structure would have to be similar.

Overall I like the new look. But there are a number of initial problems which CO needs to fix as soon as it can:

1. No search options for +/- 1 day and nearby airports.

2. Changing flights in the search boxes at the bottom of flight results pages will not register if you only hit return rather than hitting the "search" button.

3. Using the "multiple cities" button on the homepage does NOT take user to the multiple cities page but just to the advanced search page-- not the same!!!

4. Clicking on "change/view existing reservations" from the "reservations" drop-down menu does NOT take user to the saved reservations, but just to a page for *adding* reservations by their confirmation number-- a page that allows NEITHER the change nor the view of existing reservations!!!

***CO should know that it is now VERY CONFUSING to get to the page with all of the saved reservations-- and not at all clear how to do this from the home page.

5. Related to #4, only 1 reservation appears on the homepage. I am aware others have commented on this, but who decided that we needed 3x as much OnePass info on the homepage but not as many reservations?

Hopefully CO actually looks at forums like these and takes note... I'm keeping my fingers crossed! AZStagecoach.

I cannot access Continental's web site since yesterday and must book a ticket urgently... This is indeed unacceptable...what's going on?
Does anyone know what is the reason? A world-class airline without web site for 24 hours!!!! This must mean a huge loss of money for them.

Maybe they changed it to another address which is not specified in Google or anywhere?

Thanks for any related info.

Most likely something in your location. Their web site is up and DNS servers are set correctly

Using this Dutch Looking Glass http://lg.euronet.nl/ ... my hunch is there is a problem between opentransit.net (193.251) and att.net (12.123) networks.

In the traceroute you will notice that the packets from Telecity, #1 and Amsterdam (Telecity, #2) will not make it from opentransit.net into att.net network (193.251.241.42 or the next nod seem to be the trouble ). While packets from (Muiderstraat, #1) will make it into att.net (packets are going from 193.251.241.42 to att.GW.opentransit.net (193.251.248.34) and on to 12.123.8.190)

I'm thinking CO needs to contact ATT and ATT needs to contact OpenTransit.net to fix that.

If I were designing a website...

I would make sure that my navigation bars aren't left-aligned while the body is all center-justified.

Secondly, it's nice to hear that there are so many other aviation entusiasts who use Safari and Firefox - I'm in good company!  sun

The worlwide sites are probably created only for those countries where CO flies to.

If you are in Poland or Russia why would you need CO dedicated website for?

Does any other carrier who does not fly there offer you a dedicated local website?

I guess CO may want to protect itself from possible fraud and since the demand for this may be minimal is probably not worth it.

No... The reason is that something is wrong technically. There is no way CO will block access to it's site for selected countries. That just doesn't make sense, and it won't happen.

On www.flyertalk.com there are now over 400 posts discussing the new website at this thread. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=584661 Everyone is complaining about a lot of issues ranging from access to the site, reservations not working, etc. and most seriously, if you play around with the confirmation code in the URL when you bring up one of your reservations, you can access other people's reservations, and once there, you can cancel or change them. Very serious. It never should have been rolled out without beta testing among users.

I used the new CO web site to book a flight on Sunday. At that time it still had a lot of errors. I could not sign into my account. The good news was when I went to select the seat on my flights, I had access to selecting exit row seats. Usually they do not open up exit row seats for selection until you check-in 24 hours before the flight. I do like the new look of the site.
I am extraordinarily patient, provided I get my own way in the end.
