AI 772s On North American Routes?

Mon Jul 31, 2006 4:41 am

Hello, everyone.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if AI plans on using any of their three 772ER's on North American routes any time soon? I know they have some 773ER's and 772LR's entering their fleet soon, but will they ever utilize any of their existing 772ER's before they get their ordered triple sevens? I know their route has been mostly Europe and YYZ, but any possibility of AI replacing their 744's with 772ER's on US routes?

any info is appreciated...

As of now there is no such intention as they are totally occupied in what they do.

2x 777s DEL-ATQ-BHX-YYZ 6x
1x 777 BOM-LHR 5x
BOM-AMD-LHR 2x [Mostly in rotation with the 744]
1x 777 DEL-DAC-CCU-LHR 4x

Keep them out of ORD! we can't afford to lose any more 747s.

How often are AI having technical issues with their 777's? I can only speak for the ones on the BHX route, but I cannot remember a time when either of the flights have ever landed on time.

They are always delayed for some reasons.

Think they are being over worked.

Am I correct in thinking they are ex UA 777's?

Sadly, both ORD and JFK will probably see AI 777's only, say 5 - 7 years down the line, when AI becomes an all 777/787 airline....the daily AI 747 to JFK has been in place since the late 1970's.... sigh

Would be nice since I didn't really get great daytime shots of the 777 at JFK.

agreed and disagreed. we are losing too many 747's, but, when I think about it, the 772 of AI would be a great treat.

Try 10 yrs down the line mate [minimum],, The youngest 744 in AIs fleet was deliverd in mid-1996, and once upgraded these can be well used atleast till 2016.
Plus with an India non-stop to both ORD and JFK, , we will get to see the 744 and 772LR both at JFK/EWR and ORD.

BTW for those in LAX, the first 777-300ER is expected to do the BOM-FRA-LAX runs 3x weekly by early next year.[heard it, dont flame me if it does not happen]

What is the configuration of AI's 777-200ers?

As I mentioned in another post, I think I heard that high-density doesn't work well long-haul with 777-200ers because of payload issues.

Could AI operate JFK-BOM nonstop with high density layout?

Will they ever refurbish their 744s? They may only be 10 years old, but they look like they've been flying since the days of the Connie.

Jay they were supposed to refurbish them starting this year, but since there is shortage of WBs i think they will start sending the 744s for refurbishment once the 77Ws come online.
AIs 744 fleet is 10 to 15 years old with the first one being delivered in 1991

One A310 aircraft "KOFI" has undergone refurbishment and its interiors are a blessing as compared to the other "rust buckets".

They retain the UA config, [no idea what that is] but since UA used P&W powered engines, which are the least powerful of the 772 engine, it would have severe payload restrictions on an India-US non-stop route.

Actually, I believe its first 744 came on board in 1993. It was Konarak, I think, cuz I was on it in the first week of its service, and from what I remember, even back then it looked fuddy duddy.

Do tell. What does it look like? Do the overhead IFE monitors work now, or do the aunties and uncles still have to hit it from time to time to make it work?

One of my cabin crew friends at AI showed me the pics he took of it from his cell phone camera, all i can say is that the seat coverings were very pleasing to the eye and a welcome change to the tattered product we have known.

The interiors were very neat and clean.and the galleys even better

No idea about the monitor though but it has been replaced, but is still the wall mounted IFE and not drop down plasma screens.

Hope that helps.

Still that ghastly light blue upholstery they've standardized on their fleet?

Now that's not fair at all....AI's first 744 joined the fleet in Oct or Nov of 1993 and the last of the 6 owned 744's came in 1998 (not too sure of this)....my first flight on an AI 744 was in 1996 and I found them to be in very good condition at that time....
