Most people who work behind a desk at a travel agency could not differ between an A340 and a B777....they'll prolly tell you "Yeah they r both bigs, now do you want a beach-view or a city-view?"
And guess what: neither can most people sitting in one of the seats in an A340 or a B777... and they, just like the majority of travellers, simply don't care.
As a side-note (I know that I'm not going to sway anyone from the en-vogue "travel agents are idiots" mentality here, but what the heck...), IATA training includes a complete overview over the types of planes being used, including the ability to tell clients what type of seating configurations the planes have, the approximate range and, obviously, such simple things as the amount of engines.
Travel agents that take their work seriously, and there are far more than most on this site would expect, know things like that.
