Pan Am Railroad Car, Anyone Seen It?

Mon Jul 31, 2006 11:55 am

I recently saw a railroad box car painted in Pan Am colors/letters. It was clean and bright so it must have been painted fairly recently. I saw it at a crossing in Gary, Indiana, but it could be anywhere by now. Has anyone else seen this? Why is a railroad car painted in Pan Am? I usually pay attention to trains and I have never seen another car painted like this. I wish I could have taken a photo, but I didn't have a camera ready;I was not expecting to see anything neat.

Pan Am III, aka Boston-Maine Airways, is owned by Guilford Transportation, a railroad company.

There has to be more than one. I saw one on a Union Pacific freight heading south though Paola Kansas the Saturday before Memorial day,2006.

I thought someone recently posted a picture of this boxcar on it's side after a rather nasty derailment...

I've seen a few of these cars come through Richmond, Virginia, recently on the CSX system headed south. Not sure what commodity is being carried.

They're actually painting as many as 3-5 boxcars daily at the Guilford Rail System yard in Waterville, Maine.

For instance :

(from Railpictures.net @ http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=100488 )

Rumors on the railroad forums are that locomotives may follow in the same blue paint scheme w/white PAN AM logo.

Such an abomination and insult to a once great carrier. For shame Guilford, I hope that the ghost of Juan Trippe provides the Guilford board of directors with many sleepless nights.

I saw a boxcar in full Pan Am colors last year in Andover, Massachusetts. However, the boxcar was white, not blue.

Guilford has been renamed PanAm Railways. Look at their website.

That would be like the one I saw in Gary.

On one hand, I am angered by this use of a once-proud logo and symbol. On the other hand, the sellers had the responsibility to stipulate the boundaries of fair use for those assets. The sellers saw dollar signs, and were blinded by them. Yes, boo on Guilford. But an equal 'boo' to the sellers. Look up 'shysters' in the dictionary and you'll see 'Guilford.' Those guys have a horrible reputation, over the rails or through the air. The sellers should have realized that the logo and tradename were potentially going to be bastardized by Guilford. It's not as though they were the best-of-breed going into that deal.
